[opensuse] Installing to USB HDD as bootable drive?
I came across this thread at the webforums, http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=50595, and it sounds very interesting. Like the OP, I'm not wild about having to physically disconnect my internal HD to set up the USB drive, but it would be nice to have a bootable HDD that I could take with me for use on friends' PCs etc. That's why I thought I would help both myself and the OP by asking their question here, too. I've read the answers to their post, and the pages linked to there, but I'm as new to to this as they are, and just as unclear about whether it will work or not. Thanks for any advice. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Make sure that you specify mounting by volume label, not device name, and then make meaningful partition names (SUSE103ROOT, SWAP TMP, USR, HOME, LOCAL etc.) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Stuart, I once installed openSUSE 10.2 on USB PEN. The way I used is actually quite simple: - Remove all HD from your machine - Insert you USBHD - Boot from CD/DVD - Install openSUSE on the USBHD as you would a regular HD - After the install is successful, go to /etc/sysconfig/kernel and, on the INITRD_MODULES, remove all SATA/PATA/SCSI/SAS/etc modules that appear in there, and place the modules needed for USB booting, like UHCI, UHCI, EHCI, usb-storage, etc. It is a very simple way and, it worked for me. How about using kiwi for same results ? I write a blog post about "how to make an openSUSE live USB" based on openSUSE wiki tutorial, here : http://lizards.opensuse.org/2008/05/21/opensuse-liveusb-with-kiwi/#more-28 It's worked like a charm :-D I used 2 GB of USB Flash disk, but it *should be* applied with USB hdd. -- Best Regards, Masim "Vavai" Sugianto /************************************************************/ Blog (ID) : http://www.vavai.com/blog/index.php Blog (EN) : http://www.vavai.net Community : http://www.opensuse.or.id /************************************************************/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I've used this method on a couple of thumbdrives and configureations I did it on a 2gb thumbdrive. I had some problems because I left on a small swap partition, and I didn't get rid of the excess modules. (I even left KDE on the drive). It worked much better when I left KDE out of the install and operated from a command line only. I did it on an 8gb thumbdrive. It worked like a charm. You don't have to remove all of you hds from your machine. But it makes the process easier. Installing the drive "By-ID" worked the best for me. There was no special volume naming required during the installation.
