Thanks for the tip. I have finally achieved "stealth" mode, except for port 80 (can't help that).
For a guy that's paranoid about Windows vulnerabilities, I'm mildly surprised his web server OS is NT. At least he wrote his own httpd. -- George Toft http://gtoft.dynip.com
via netcraft: www.grc.com is running Steve's own HTTPD on NT4 or Windows 98
hmm, I honestly dont know, what to say....
mmmm.... I have a paranoid thought - maybe he isn't returning a true evaluation and is really looking for a way to 'legally' probe known Linux machines so he can evaluate was to block Linux machines from Windows driven sites. ??? JLK
my thoughts exactly
My ISP's support list had a nice time with this site. Weirdly, nobody received anything less than reassuring about the status of their security. Oddly, this was with a variety of OS's, Apple, Microsoft, FreeBSD, Linux, all passed with flying colors. Some were, in fact, aware of holes that they had on systems which this site reported as secure.<
Me too. There seems to be a lot of other stuff on that .grc. site. Not sure how long it's been around though. Apart from the current topic, has anybody had any previous experience with it? Yeah, he writes good stuff for the M$ world. I've had some pretty good experiences with SpinRite resurrecting hard drives-- at least enough so that I could get as much data as possible off before I canned the drive. Everything he writes is in assembly code, so it's really quick and small (maybe Mickey$oft should hire this guy and put him in charge of OS development). BTW, I played with his scanner on a couple of Linux boxes with static IP addresses at work today, and I would take the analyses it provides with a grain of salt. It couldn't resolve the hostname of a dedicated web server and it told me that the SMTP port was open on another machine when it wasn't (I double-checked after the scan).
