Howdy, Would y'all please leave this kind of content off of this mailing list? This isn't a news group, it's a place to get help with SuSE Linux. It is, and it isn't. :) A thread like this would normally generates a lot of email that is interesting only to those who have an opinion about the subject. For everyone else, this is another email snowball that will probably grow and grow, and some users are incline to complain about it (especially if they have a slow net connection). Personally, since I have DSL, I can afford to skip the whole thing if I want to. Maybe we could put an "[OT]" tag in the subject line of all "off topic" related discussion (that is nothing directly related to SuSE Linux techinal questions). That way if someone is downloading off a 9600bps modem they can use promail to filter out all the "junk" by sending anything with "[OT]" in the subject line to /dev/null ?? This would have to work on the "honor system / consideration for other" thing though and people would have to determine on a case by case basic of what Off Topic was and if there post was guility of it. People could discuss some more indepth issuses and people that just wanted the "hard core facts" could filter out the other people's "noise" ?? I (for one) do appreciate them, and sometimes follow the links for a quick read. I'd also subscribe to the notion that the list is for discussion, and not _just_ a "help desk" sort of resource. If we are polling opinions, I vote for a [Fred Miller] tag :-) Skip it, if it bothers you... I follow them every now and then. Alvaro

At least get the name right!
There is probably some Fred Miller (SuSE user) out there wondering why
he's getting all this hate mail, that should be going to Fred MOODY! :-)

The original post that started this was from Fred A. Miller. Fred has been doing this sort of thing for as many years as I've been on the list. Some I read, some I don't. But I'll always look because he finds some real interesting stuff.. On Fri, 18 Aug 2000, you wrote:

I don't think this would help... If I understand procmail correctly it does not filter until the post has been d/l'ed. So you're still wasteing connect time. BUT I want to say that expect for a couple of sex spams we've had over the past three years or so we stay on topic very good. Also I kind of like Fred putting up links list this. Here in Germany I pay for every minute I'm on the phone so I miss allot of good stuff. He points out things that I'm sometimes interested in. Plus he does not take up a lot of connect time, just the title and link. What bits my ass is you guys that say "me too" and quote 100 lines. Lets take care of that before we jump on Fred, OK? Later! Run it on your ISP's mail server. It will filter it out of you pop account when it hits your ISP mail server, when you download your email, it will be filtered. Don't run procmail locally, that would defeat the purpose.

Actually, this is a discussion mailing list. Victor -- "Let's get it straight: copyright infringement is not piracy.
