[S.u.S.E. Linux] word processing
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 ++++++++++++ start story - skip it if you wish ++++++++++++ Since I'm still new to Linux, I keep Win95 in my disk together with SuSE 5.1. I'm trying to learn more and more in order to cut my dependency from MS Windows for reasons, amongst others, such as the one I'm going to enumerate right now: Today, after spending roughly one and a half hours typing a speech on MSWord, I suddenly got one of these, getting more usuals with time, annoying, frustrating, "illegal operation" messages which end up forcing you into closing the program down without having the chance to save your work. Of course I could/should have saved the work in advance (but just how many times?), or activated the auto-save option (which slows you down quite a lot and stops you every time it's saving). Anyway, all my work down the flush... no trace of it anywhere, no way I could recover it. Of course I'm guilty as charged for using MS Word, Access, or even Windows 95. But my guilt is just not having known about Linux before now. ++++++++++++ end story - start request ++++++++++++ Now, could anyone advice me on a neat, easy to use, easy to configure with the printer, word processor for Linux? There are several: Applixware (from www.Redhat.com, $$) StarOffice 4.0 (from www.stardivision.com, free for personal use) WordPerfect 7 (from www.sdcorp.com, $$) Corel is also coming out with WordPerfect 8 for linux, in about a month. $$ Xemacs is included with SuSE and is a decent word processor. In my opinion, StarOffice is the best. But, it does crash occasionally and takes _lots_ of memory. I have used WP7 for linux, and it is excellent! I think they want about $90 for a personal copy. I would wait for the WP8 release. (maybe use xemacs until then) Applixware I haven't used enough to have an opinion. And, Netscape can be used as a wordprocessor, too. It has centering, bold, coloring, etc. Only saves in html, though. There are probably many I missed. Try these links: <A HREF="http://www.linuxapps.com"><A HREF="http://www.linuxapps.com</A">http://www.linuxapps.com</A</A>> <A HREF="http://www.linux-center.org/en/"><A HREF="http://www.linux-center.org/en/</A">http://www.linux-center.org/en/</A</A>> mc -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I use StarOffice 4.0 and like it. It's very similar to MS Office andimports most word formats, except for 97. It is pretty memory intensive, so I'd have at least 64MB of ram. (I have 96MB here) There is also Applixware (by RedHat) and Word Perfect. Both of these you have to buy. StarOffice is free for personal use. Just a small correction: Applix is by Applix, Redhat is merely one of the distributors. Dana J. Laude wrote:

I did a web search on StarOffice, and discovered the package is named "so40_lnx_01.tar.gz". I have been enjoying _Applixware_, originally through Red Hat but now also from S.u.S.E. The word processor is very much like Word but much more stable. Plus you get a spreadsheet, presentation program, email, etc. Since you're using 5.1 I believe there is a demo on your CD's. Give it a try. Phil Bennett "Give a man a fish and feed him for today. If you're just interested in basic word processing and would prefer to avoid a cash layout, check out LyX, a wysiwyg-style front end to LaTeX. Very cool, configurable, and free. Apparently, there's also a KDE version called KLyX, which some people rave about. Depending on what you plan do do, you might even do away with lyx and use your trusty editor with (plain) LaTeX. However, that is in no way WYSIWY(W)G ((won't) get), and you'd have to learn a bit of LaTeX, too.
