[SuSE Linux] Ethernet problem
Hi all, I've been trying to set up my network this weekend w/o much success :( I've got two boxes connected using RJ45 Crossover cable. In my main box (a Gateway G6-400 running SuSE 6.0) I have a Netgear FA310tx card. It actually came with a linux driver (tulip). In the other box (an old Compaq prolinea 4/66 running SuSE 5.2) I have a Netgear EA201 (ISA)card. This did not come with any Linux driver. It is NE2000 compatible though. I managed to set them up correctly (I'm pretty sure) in each of the boxes... that is to say that i compiled support into the kernels and each device is setup when booting. In yast I went to 'network base configuration' and added ethernet (eth0) on each of the boxes. On my main box I gave it an ip of 192.168.0.99 the crappy box was given an ip of 192.168.0.44 I then activated the device on each and rebooted. At this point I'm thinking that I should be setup and ready to go. Am I wrong? I try to ping the old computer using 'ping 192.168.0.44' but it doesnt do anything... no error messages or anything. I press ^C and of course it tells me how many packets were sent and that all were lost. I tried the same thing on the old box with the same results. Can someone point me in the right direction? I'm pretty new to networking as is obvious. What should I do? What am i doing wrong? What kind of cable do you use? Coax or TP? If it is Coax, Is it terminated ok? One terminator in each end. If it is TP, Is it at crossover cable or do you utilize a hub/switch? Try pining your localhost first. (127.0.0.1) Should be ok if the cards are setup right. On the main box, try the mainbox-IP (192.168.0.99) Should also be ok. Then go to the old box and ping it (192.168.0.44) Should also be ok. Then if both are ok so far and you still cant ping the other, Check cables, most probably they are faluty. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

I'm almost 100ure it's tp... and it's crossover.
Try pining your localhost first. (127.0.0.1)
works on both boxes
Should be ok if the cards are setup right. On the main box, try the mainbox-IP (192.168.0.99) Should also be ok.
Then go to the old box and ping it (192.168.0.44) Should also be ok.
This works... this works also
Then if both are ok so far and you still cant ping the other, Check cables, most probably they are faluty. I'm pretty sure the cables are OK. I just bought it yesterday to replace the factory supplied cable.
I've noticed that when I shutdown the system on the old box I get this error message: SIOCDELRT: no such process error while executing /sbin/route del -net 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0 Another note: yesterday I used the diagnostics disks to test the cards. I was able to get them to communicate (they just kept sending packets to one another) when I set up my main computer as master and my old box as slave. It would not work the other way around though. I've searched the net for info on the ISA card (netgear EA201). All I found were three references about people having problems getting it to work with Linux. But no answer as to if they were or were not able to get it to work. Thanks for helping me ;-) rimez -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>
