[opensuse] How to create a dual-boot
Roughly 6 years ago SuSE forum helped me install both SuSE ans Windows on the same computer. I haven't done that since then any more. I have installed SuSE 11.1 on my dektop at the lab. I have an empty partition. How can I install Windows as well so as to create a dual-boot ? Maybe this can be handle by Grub ? It is usually easier if Windows is installed first, and Linux after, as Windows is notorious for removing any other OS boot info, whereas openSUSE gladly detects the Windows partition and adds it to grub without a hassle. But all is not lost: I would suggest the following: 1) Install Windows into the free partition, letting it do it's dirty deeds. 2) Boot the openSUSE install DVD. Do not do an install. Choose that you want to repair the system. In the menus there you can limit it to sorting out the boot stuff. openSUSE will then set up grub, along with a Windows entry. You can try step 2 right away to see that it works. It is a really nice SUSE feature. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. This is the relavent entry on my dual boot machine Windows is on the first partition. ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: windows### title Windows rootnoverify (hd0,0) chainloader +1 Hope this helps, the only problem I think you will have is stopping Windows taking over the machine. You have to be careful installing Windows on a working Linux system. One thing that will happen is your MBR will be replaced. You'll have to recreate it to boot to Grub. Generally, it's easier to install Windows first and then Linux. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

That's typical, but not certain. When the MBR code is already generic and Grub is where it belongs on a primary partition instead of where it doesn't belong on the MBR, then normally it won't get replaced. http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Prefered_bootloader_options
You'll have to recreate it to boot to Grub.
Actually if Grub is already on a / or /boot you can dd its boot sector to a file that Windows can find and use to chainload. Using doz to boot Grub this way means no worries about doz screwing up your ability to boot Linux.
Generally, it's easier to install Windows first and then Linux.
But then Windows needs reinstallation more often than anything else, so it's good to know how to do it after. http://fm.no-ip.com/install-doz-after.html -- No Jesus - No peace , Know Jesus - Know Peace Team OS/2 ** Reg. Windows can boot Grub. Grub can boot Windows. I have many systems, and multiboot on more than not. http://fm.no-ip.com/install-doz-after.html -- No Jesus - No peace , Know Jesus - Know Peace Team OS/2 ** Reg. Why not install VirtualBox from here: (USB support) http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads and you won't need to dual boot, unless of course there is some specific peace of hardware that you need to connect to directly. You can even install directly to that partition using VirtialBox. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

IIRC Felix Miata has a how on installing Windows after Linux. You may want to Google for it.
