Re: [SuSE Linux] up and running in all three os'es
I have FreeBSD on my system too. Not crazy about the ports myself like the SuSE rpm system a lot more. I found it was really hard to install my printer in FreeBSD. Also I found they always a bit late with their upgrades example KDE. And it runs slower then linux. Kernel was a bit of a pain to to compile, have to edit a text file, no xconfig(didn't like that). Something I thought was weird was the Linux programs ran faster then FreeBSD Native program in Linux Emulator mode. I use Netscape for linux, in freeBSD with the Linux Emulator, runs faster, then the FreeBSD one(Weird huh). === john bitar cruel@rocketmail.com "Some people have a life, others have Windows to tell them where they want to go today" -- Ronald C.F. I now have apache running properly in freebsd, so my site is back online 24/7, regardless of which os I'm using. You can tell which os I'm in at the moment when you visit by the gif at the bottom of the page, either S.u.S.E. or FreeBSD, and if I'm in that other os, well, there's no need to brag eh?, so no gif at all. ;) Btw, the more I use FreeBSD, the more I like it. I still feel that S.u.S.E. is the best desktop os that I've used,
know if any of you linux and freebsd. period.

I dislike all package formats equally. There is no substitute for compiling from source. Packages with dependency checking like rpm is the way to go for initial install, no argument there, and I understand the need to have an easy delivery format that Joe Newuser can cope with.
linux. Kernel was a bit of a pain to to compile, have to edit a text file, no xconfig(didn't like that).
I've always been more at home with make config. make xconfig is like taking a shower with your clothes on, but that's just me.

The freebsd native netscape I'm running seems faster, and for a fact uses less cpu than linux netscape does. In fact, xwindows period feels much faster in freebsd than in linux. I'm running some of my linux bins and they aren't displaying any abnormal behaviour. Nice. The more I run freebsd the more I like it. The console in S.u.S.E. is much nicer, and like I've said, S.u.S.E. is a far more polished desktop os. I think my initial impressions of freebsd were tainted by my familiarity with linux. I am really starting to like freebsd a lot, and I would recommend it to anyone looking to try another flavor of *nix. It isn't anywhere near as slick right out of the box as most linux distributions, but it's a killer os for hackers. If you are a hands-on type with your os then freebsd might be for you. I'm not jumping ship or anything, I love S.u.S.E. and will continue to be a big advocate for them, but FreeBSD just became a permanent fixture at the Lankton house. I really need to set up another box, or two :) -- .###. /#######\## -==============================================- ;##### ;# Mike's WindowMaker ;##### ;# <A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html"><A HREF="http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html</A">http://tasteslikechicken.ml.org/windowmaker.html</A</A>> \# /## -==============================================- ###'---'#### - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Hi! Trying to kill the keyboard, satan3@home.com produced: [compiling a kernel]
I've always been more at home with make config. make xconfig is like taking a shower with your clothes on, but that's just me.
Well, I prefer make menuconfig: You have random access and a structure, it works on the console, it has colour (well, sometimes colour is good so you see things faster :-), it works under X, it has a help function and I did mention a functional structure and indention and submenues? :-) And it works from the Keyboard and hides what you don't need at the moment, and and and ... Whew ... time to get off the drug, don't ya think? :-) -Wolfgang -- PGP 2 welcome: Mail me, subject "send PGP-key". If you've nothing at all to hide, you must be boring.
