KDE or Gnome? There are a number of options: KDiskFree and FileLight to name but two. -- =================================================== Rodney Baker VK5ZTV rodney.baker@iinet.net.au =================================================== -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

You didn't mention what desktop you are using. There are loads of options and possibilities depending on exactly what you're looking for. One tool is KDiskFree http://kde.org/applications/system/kdiskfree/ There are also several KDE4 plasma widgets that show various bits of useful info about your drive space. Another is Disk Usage Analyzer (aka baobab) for Gnome. http://library.gnome.org/users/baobab/3.2/baobab.html One or both of these are probably already installed on your openSUSe system depending on what choices you made on install. If they are not there, they will be installable via your software manager (YaST). Yeah, I have to try this one only, I have KDE.

I have to install via YaST since they are not in the default installation, since it was through the CD. Thanks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

konqueror sysinfo:/ (from alt+f2) Gives a quick overview of disk usage + all sorts of other useful stuff. You can make a quick button for this by dragging konqueror from the start menu to a panel, then right click > icon settings > application > command, and there you write "konqueror sysinfo:/". Mind, I'm using kde 4.6 on opensuse 11.4, not sure how this works for 12.1 but it's been around for ages so shouldn't be a problem Hope this helps, Haro -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ah well, you are telling about the 'My Computer' icon? And opening it yields the same result when running 'konqueror sysinfo:/'. http://postimage.org/image/luciy7t9b/ But it was in the default installation of 12.1 Thanks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yeah installed, it is good.
there is also filelight (circular graph)
it is also good. Installed. But by default it shows two different diagrams, one for /home and one for /: http://postimage.org/image/gnhwfdlyf/ Can I see in it the whole hard disk view in a similar fashion?
and xdiskusage (not really graphical :-()
Well, I installed this also, but after installed I check it in yast and it is written that: "xdiskusage - Grapically displays the amount of disks used for by each subdirectory" (in the 'File List' menu below) but it says 'Graphically displays' and I am not able to see it from Menu, is there some command to see through it? "rpm -ql xdiskusage" gives us /usr/bin/xdiskusage but alas it appears to work by partition as with the other tools. There is an older kde3 app called kdirstat but I can't recall if that scans by partition, you'd have to try it to find out. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The output of 'rpm -ql xdiskusage' which I got in the terminal is as follows: /usr/bin/xdiskusage /usr/share/doc/packages/xdiskusage /usr/share/doc/packages/xdiskusage/README /usr/share/man/man1/xdiskusage.1.gz
From the above there is a file 'README', I opened it in Konqueror and it says me that you need 'fltk' if to 'compile', means what is compile and why it needs to be complied? Is it necessary for using 'xdiskusage'?

No, that is only _if_ you need to compile the program. Inm tjhis instance we have no need, it's been compiled and packaged for us. The key line in the output from the rpm command is this one: /usr/bin/xdiskusage As it's in /usr/bin there is a strong chance that this is the executable for our app. So, from the command line, type /usr/bin/xdiskusage or simply xdiskusage as /usr/bin should be in your path and hit enter. That will bring up the program.

Probably kde's system configuration cache has not been updated since the install. You can try running kbuildsycoca4 or in kde, type Alt-F2 and then type "kdirstat" in the box, and enter. If the file has been correctly packaged the install would have included the necessary qt3 libraries etc to run, so it should run just fine under kde4. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yeah, running ' /usr/bin/xdiskusage' in the termincl works. Okay.

I 'kbuildsycoca4' searched at two places:- i) Alt+F2 ii) Menu option, and it came but it didn't run! There was just an option where it was written that 'run kbuildsycoca4' but when I hit, nothing happens. http://postimage.org/image/8gguuwg17/ I also typed 'kdirstat' in Alt+F2 but there is no result however, in Yast, it is there. While 'filelight' is really nice, in fact I had installed 'kdirstat' just to see with some difference, that's all. It's a text only program so probably best to run from a terminal if you need to see the output.

rpm -ql kdirstat | grep bin Gives us /opt/kde3/bin/kdirstat which is likely not in your path due to kde3 being so out of date. Nothing to stop you running the full command from either krunner (Alt-F2) or a command line though. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

But I run 'kbuildsycoca4', gives me the output as follows: kbuildsycoca4 running... kbuildsycoca4(3715) parseLayoutNode: The menu spec file contains a Layout or DefaultLayout tag without the mandatory Merge tag inside. Please fix your file. So is it some type of thing am I missing?

It means that the full command is '/opt/kde3/bin/kdirstat' which is to be run? However, for unnecessary complications, I have uninstalled this application of KDE3, but still the following directory exists: /opt/kde3 Should/Can I manually delete all the contents of this directory (/opt/kde3) as 'root', since I guess the only KDE 3 application (which I installed was this one, 'kdirstat')? Hmm - no idea, sorry.

Indeed. Also make sure you removed any dependencies that would have been installed with kdirstat, eg kdelibs3 and kdelibs3-default-style. Finally, have a look through this directory to make sure there are no files belonging to any installed rpms (rpm -qf <filename> if in doubt) before you remove the directory. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, for this I make it remain there, it won't harm anything ( I guess so....) or how to remove 'kbuildsycoca4' (since this is not in Yast)? Thanks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

rpm -qf `which kbuildsycoca4` tells you that this is part of kde4, I'd leave that where it is. Go ahead and get rid of /opt/kde3 though if you are satisfied there's nothing in there but directory structures. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
