[opensuse] kernel panic - openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64) on Intel Atom 230 mobo (D945GCLF)
I get a kernel panic during the install of the x86_64 version on an Intel D945GCLF (Atom 230). I have tried the "safe mode" and "no apic" options but no success. From what I have read on the 'Net, Atom 230 is a 64 bit cpu; I guess it should be able to run the 64bit version. No issues with openSUSE x86 version with the exception of compiling the driver for the RTL8101E NIC. <console excerpt> BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at ffffffff80209000 IP: [<ffffffff802460bc>] Oops: 0003 [1] SMP .... kernel panic not syncing Attempted to kill init! </console excerpt> Has anyone successfully installed the 64bit version on a system with the Atom 230 cpu? I believe this is the model which has a known bug in the shipping BIOS. A colleague of mine bought one of those. After upgrading the BIOS to the latest from Intel, it worked fine (assuming it is the same model, but I think it is) Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hopefully this will solve my problem <http://forums.opensuse.org/install-boot-login/402136-kernel-panic-11-1-64bit.html> I have downloaded the BIOS upgrade and will try to update later. -- Arun Khan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Arun, the Intel D945GCLF mobo contains the Intel Hyperthreaded Atom N270. However, that CPU does not has EM64T instructions, so it is not 64bits capable. The 64bits version of Atom is the 330. You can check both CPU's here. http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLB73 http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLG9Y The Intel mobo that has the 330 is the D945GCLF2. You can check it at http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/D945GCLF2/D945GCLF2-overv... However I've read about that BIOS upgrade that solved the problem of booting openSUSE 11.1 on those boards. Try it... It should work.
TIA

Indeed the N270 (Atom) in the netbooks is 32bits only. However, the D945GCLF has the 230 processor which is 64bit. Original BIOS on the mobo and openSUSE 11.1 64bit do not like each other. However, others have reported that they were able to install openSUSE 11.0 (64) with original BIOS rev. I updated the BIOS. Still, I encountered some problems during the install proces which may be specific to my setup. After 4 botched attempts I was able to complete the install process. I will document the issues later on this thread. -- Arun Khan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
