hi, i'm trying to find a good, linux-compatible webcam. does anyone have any recommendations? i've been looking at the Logitech Quickcam Pro 3000. has anyone tried that out? thanks! -- xiaolei li
Hello all, Quick question, probably long answer: How do I build an rpm?I got gphoto2-2.0.tar.gz from the www site.In the install document it says: This installs the software and documentation into the proper directories on your system. If you want to use your system's package system instead, follow a) or b) instead. a) make rpm (This is not working properly, as of 2001-11-19. We're working on a fix) If you're running a RPM based system (e.g. Redhat Linux or SuSE Linux), you can build RPM packages and install these. The packages will be located in packaging/rpm/RPMS/. b) make deb (This is not implemented yet) If you're running a DEB based system (e.g. Debian GNU/Linux), you can build .deb packages and install these. The packages will be located in FIXME. gphoto2 is not designed to be installed as a setuid/setgid program. Doing so will open up a security hole in your system! If you have permission problems when accessing your camera, you will probably want to create a new user group for the users that are to have camera access and change the permissions of the serial or USB device to match. Whats this mean ?How do I install this app?

Have a GOOD look at checkinstall. It will, after you configure and make the package, install the software and make an rpm, updating the rpm database and store the rpm package under /usr/src/packages/RPMS/i3xx/package-name.rpm. -- Pat Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 Registered at: http://counter.li.org 8:14pm up 11 days, 3:29, 6 users, load average: 0.00, 0.03, 0.07

I haven't checked lately, but Logitech traditionally shuns linux driver writers. I always consider them a last resort. Can anyone comment as to whether or not that has changed? JHS
The 3000 uses the same lens and stuff (not a cam expert - sorry) as the Philips cams. Philips semi-support the guy doing the work...

I've had good luck with my Creative WebBlaster II. There is a driver you have to get for it and insert the module <been a while>. Just do a search for installing it in Linux and see what info there is. As a side note, although I had it working great for video capture etc..I never got it to work right with GnomeMeeting, which is what I had really hoped to use it for. Alas it is put away in the pile for now Hth ----////---- Mark Doucette kranked@oberon.ark.com WinFree and Lovin' it. SuSE Rox Linux! Registered Linux User # 240512 ----////----
Yes, I'm using it for my cam (www.rubberturnip.org.uk/webcam.html to see sample output) Be sure to upgrade to the latest SuSE kernel build tho - the 2.4.10 in 7.3 doesn't support it.
