Hi people, I've updated SuSE 9.0 server (mk_initrd, mod-init, vga=normal, modprobe.conf,... ) and compiled a vanilla 2.6.2 kernel from ftp.kernel.org. It worked very well. Then , I've tried a kernel upgrade on that machine to a vanilla 2.6.3 kernel, but every time i recompile the kernel and reboot I get only a blank screen on console. The strange thing is that, even with the blank screen, I can log in by ssh and all the the services in the machine seems to be up with no problems. I've also played with framebuffer support in kernel (I marked only VESA and unchecked all the others ) but nothing changed. I don't know what to do. What can be happening? Thanks -- Mário Viana Barbosa --------------------------

It undoubtedly has to do with the way you have the console set up for booting. I went through the same problems. You must have changed something between 2.6.2 and 2.6.3. I finally got it working fine.

First, in SuSEfirewall2, you have to put the interfaces of pptp as internal, ( FW_DEV_INT="eth0 ppp0 ppp1" for example), then you have to reload the SuSEfirwall2 every time a new interface comes up or down, ( you can do that in /etc/ppp/ip-up ) Don´t forget: FW_MASQUERADE="yes" FW_MASQ_DEV="$FW_DEV_EXT" Hope it helps. -- Jota Omella http://developers.com.py

CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y is needed in the .config file, otherwise you don't get a VT console. My complete settings ---- CONFIG_NETCONSOLE=y CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y CONFIG_HW_CONSOLE=y CONFIG_SERIAL_8250_CONSOLE=y CONFIG_SERIAL_CORE_CONSOLE=y # CONFIG_LP_CONSOLE is not set # Console display driver support CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y # CONFIG_MDA_CONSOLE is not set CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE=y CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y CONFIG_PCI_CONSOLE=y Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ....
