Yeh yeh yeh yeh! SMP Celerons - on MSB adaptor cards or
I'd opt for Tyan for the MOB...they have a dual P-II and a dual P-III available, with Banshee video,
OK, Voodoo is the best (only) supported 3D card on Linux nad the Banshee has no stupid passthru cable.
SB AWE-64 PCI,
Hmm. They are a bugger to get working right under Linux and even with all the patches and tools etc it is major work to be able to use the features properly. Having said that, once you have the Creative sound fonts working properly, you can get some superb midi music out of it. I have some Pat Metheny and some other jazz .mid files that really really rock. In fact you'd never know it was a midi file, some of this music sounds just like it does on the CD. Mmmmmm. But playing the same pieces through kmidi with all the supplied patches through my OPL3/SA2 card sounds like shite! Moral: only put up with the hassle of an AWE64 if you *need* to play midi files.
Adaptec is fine,
DPT SmartRAID is better. Adaptec SCSI adapters are just toys for amateurs and wannabees.
but increase to 512....more
is always better, ya know.<g>
A waste of cash unless you this is a server built to serve out many simultaneous connections. The only workstation applications that eat up that amount of memory are Netscape (memory leaks), professional video processing apps and some badly-written Java applications which run like a crippled dog anyway.
Oh yes.....use an Everfit case...more money, but
MUCH better built.
You want to put it in a SOCK? Or, have a look at www.colorcase.com. Get a toolless, slide-out case with dual fans and still make your computer look like it was built by technologically superior aliens. Much better than an iMac.
You can get it all from CSI at: 800-998-0170.
He's on commission or something. Never trust a guy who just happens to have the telephone number on him...
Which Tyan board is that? Tyan is my second choice to EPoX anyway, but now I'm really interested. I did notice a board with ES1371 sound, but I didn't see anything about Banshee or V3 integrated video...
Think about this. Do you really want to throw your MB away when you upgrade the multimedia bits? Integrated preipherals suck. IMHO, the only thing about a motherboard that can make a daily difference to your life is STABILITY. Forget the 5% more speed (in some very artificial benchmarks) Tom Pabst says you can get. Just get a board that everyone says works. Whichever one that happens to be.
Don't forget; Linux is only free if your time isn't worth anything!
