Hello Linux folkz, Friend of mine wanted to hook up his home network on the Internet. I advised him to use Linux box with two NICs as a firewall and gateway that I use for my home network. One NIC is connected to DSL modem, another NIC is connected to internal network hub. But he wants to use expensive one DSL modem with embedded firewall features connected directly to his home network hub. Could somebody tell please what network schema is more preferable in terms of security and protection?
If you don't have the space get the expensive DSL bridge/router. If you have the room setup a cheap PC with OpenBSD, two nics, ipf, and ipnat. Secure by default, probably cheaper, and much more flexible than the DSL bridge/router. Cable Modem/DSL Router/firewall/switch combinations are relatively inexpensive. Certainly a cheap dedicated PC with a Linux firewall and 2 NICs is one solution. Both Linksys and Netgear make a Cable Modem/DSL Router/firewall/switch combination. Both have single port versions for about $100US. The Linksys 4 port model, BEFSR41 has an integrated 4 port 10/100 switch and is available at Amazon.com for $148 +S&H. I recently priced them in stores at about $179 (CompUSA).
