[opensuse] Who owns the land?
Reading the other thread I got a little confused what was being said. I thought I should add to the confusion. I think this is accurate. - Over the last 250 years, the US Government has provided "fee-simple title" to about 2/3rds of the land in this country. But it still owns about 1/3rd of the country. - In Canada, only 15% was privately titled, the remaining 85% is still owned "by the crown". - In Australia about 23% of the land is "Crown Land". === In the British countries (UK / Canada / Australia) the Queen is the head of the Crown and some claim she owns the Crown Land in those countries. That may be true, but I seriously doubt she could sell any of it. On the other hand, a 100 year lease to build an airport, etc. might be reasonable. === Remember Hong Kong? For 99 years it was leased by the English from China. The lease ended 20 years ago and it is back under Chinese rule. === In the US, I've heard people claim our $17 Trillion debt isn't that big a deal. After all, the government owns many trillions of dollars of private land. If worst came to worst it could sell it off. I don't know if that is realistic or not.
