[opensuse] Non=generic icon in v11.3/kde4 desktop folder?
I've placed in the Desktop Folder a link to a frequently used Java app. KDE assigns to it a generic icon with a shapely but uninformative large question mark. I have other icons, in various formats, suitable for use with this app. Is there a way to induce kde4 to use it? There is a related matter that I would like to understand: In v11.1/kde3, most, but not all, of the icons shown for the issues of Scientific American that I keep in a folder were mini-images of the respective covers; I have no idea why, if kde knew how to make some icons in this way, if failed to do so for others and had to use a generic icon. In v11.3/kde4, ALL the icons are Acrobat symbols (these are PDF files), with no cover images at all. Can this be remedied? -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Iianm, kde4 derives its properties from the <app>.desktop file. Look for your <java-app>.desktop file and link to it in your Desktop Folder rather than directly to the app itself. Or barring that, a <right-click> on the app within the Desktop Folder will yeald access to "properties" which provides a menu containing an icon that represents the application. Clicking on that icon will give you a path to assigning your own chosen icon. As I recall, kde3 was quite similar but did not rely so much on the <app>.desktop file and did not automagically select icons that were not directly linked to applications. ps. negatively portraying kde4, especially relating it to kde3, does not help you achieve anything and may discourage others from lending help! I don't think I did that. I described the behavior under KDE3 to illustrate that sometimes it acted as I would wish and sometimes it didn't, and indicated that I didn't understand what caused the difference; it seemed quirky to me at the time. I also said that KDE4 acts uniformly, but in the way I do not prefer. I don't see that I paid KDE3 a great compliment by doing this. What I would like to do is to induce KDE4 to act in one of the ways that KDE3 had. It was descriptive, nothing more. About a year ago I asked here if there was a way to associate a given icon file with a file in KDE3, and was told that there was not, and I didn't pursue that further. I am hoping that KDE4 can do better. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I believe you were give bad information re kde3 as I frequently assigned icons I perferred to apps on the desktop or kmenu. Did you get the icon assigned to your kde4 java app? -- Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Not yet. I have been too busy with other matters. I'll get to it. About the magazine covers appearing being used as icons for some issues but not for others (in kde3): It's hard to believe that the publisher uses different schemes for embedding the cover graphic in the PDF file. depending on the issue. I found the behavior very hard to understand. Now that kde4 doesn't use the graphic at all for any issue, the question becomes what subtle change in kde4 ignores the graphic altogether. Or what is it about the graphic that causes either version of kde to pick up the graphic for use as the icon, or to ignore it. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Dolphin might not show a preview (icon as preview) of the file because its size is too big. You can adjust the file size for previews in dolphin's settings. And you have to enable previews for that folder. Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've done it. I copied the desired icon into /usr/share/pixmaps, because that's where the existing icons are, found it in the collection, and dropped it on the place provided, and that was that. I didn't do anything with the Preview tab, but now after reading your note have examined it. I see nothing to enable or disable, but the tab shows a preview of the bash script that starts the Java app, and that is not of interest. I don't use Dolphin much, but Konqueror shows the icon as it should, on the Desktop. I wondered if the Preview tab might be the answer to getting the magazine covers shown as icons for the issues. I opened one, and found that page blank, with a "Do Not Enter" icon in the center, so it doesn't want me there, although these files belong to Owner, which is me. Is that because of the size of the cover illustrations? If so, is there a way for a script to find the cover graphic, reduce it to appropriate size, and assign it to the file? The fact that KDE3 knew how to do this (at least sometimes) suggests that there would be a way. -- Stan Goodman Qiryat Tiv'on Israel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
