Converting my son - printing
Hello SuSE people, Hope you can help with the final conversion. After many crashes, worms, virii, etc. in Windows I finally convinced my son to allow me to install SuSE 9.2 on his machine. All went well and he is learning the Linux way. Except !! that he cannot print! Unfortunately, during the Windoz period, he purchased one of those all-in-one Brother printer/scanner/copier things. I think the model is MFC 4230C or 3240C or something close. I don't think it it is supported. Yast does see it though. Just hoping someone on this list has run across this and successfully installed this beast in SuSE. I need to keep my son converted!! Any help appreciated. Bob S.

Two places to check for a driver is (a) http://linuxprinting.org. (b) the manufacturer for a PPD file (c) check the driver DVD for a PPD file I always check linuxprinting.org first so I don't waste my time and also let the manufacturer know why I didn't buy their product if it is not supported. Doesn't help in your case but tell them anyway. Good luck. -- Ken Schneider UNIX since 1989, linux since 1994, SuSE since 1998

Went to the Brother site and found an rpm for SuSE. Installed that and still didn't work. Read the install instructions again, this time carefully. Found out you must run it on LPD. Didn't have that installed so we installed that and that uninstalled half of CUPS. Anyway, Yast now configures and installs the printer, I think. Try to print a test page and the printer responds with "receiving data" but never prints anything. I believe the printer driver is sending "raw" and the printer doesn't know what to do with it. Could it be something like a ghost script thing? or am I off base here. And if it is something like that how do I fix it. There were one or two things in the instructions that confuse me. It says, '"Ensure that the :LP line reads as follows. :LP=/dev/USB/lp0 " Have no idea what the :LP line is or where I would find it and they do not say. Anyway, I think we are close. Maybe one of our printer gurus can point the way? Bob S.

I suppose you mean the package "lprng". Yes, it is either that or cups, choose one.

I think that would be in /etc/printcap, but I'm unsure. There is quite some documentation in /usr/share/doc/packages/lprng/Reference/index.htm - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFD4fbXtTMYHG2NR9URAjLBAJ0b0StNrcFW3Go8ZPamzCfuFbGbPQCdGgBP cLDghHPGgrrRmcJ8cKh/Z+M= =h4UH -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Not possible with Suse Linux 9.2, see http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/08/jsmeix_print-einrichten-92.html "LPRng/lpdfilter can no longer be configured with YaST." and "To switch from CUPS to LPRng/lpdfilter:"
It says, '"Ensure that the :LP line reads as follows. :LP=/dev/USB/lp0 "
Edit /etc/printcap manually. Perhaps it helps to set up a dummy queue with "lprsetup" and edit /etc/printcap then but it may also be totally wrong for this driver software from the printer manufacturer what "lprsetup" had set up. Doesn't this software from the printer manufacturer provide a good information or perhaps even a tool to set up a queue for their printer driver software? When you use software from the printer manufacturer, you should ask the printer manufacturer how to set up and use their software. In general see http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2000/08/jsmeix_print-kompatibel.html and http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/10/jsmeix_scanner-setup-92.html Kind Regards Johannes Meixner -- SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstrasse 5 Mail: jsmeix@suse.de 90409 Nuernberg, Germany WWW: http://www.suse.de/

Thanks for replying Johannes, (and all of the rest you also, of course) Now I am confident we are going to make this work for him. Question: Should we uninstall what Yast has set up for this printer?
It says, '"Ensure that the :LP line reads as follows. :LP=/dev/USB/lp0 "
Edit /etc/printcap manually.
I may be slightly confused about that. Above that statement it says if this is a USB printer, which it is, (MFC3420C )nothing further is needed. I revisited the page/s and re-read them again several times. http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/

I didn't see anything there that would indicate that. Seems that it should just work. It didn't work because of my stupidity and not understanding the process. I had only installed lpd-filter and not the lprng package. I will do that tomorrow. Carlos made me realize/understand that.

Actually, the site does provide quite a lot of information. Another question: The page states that for this model a "cups wrapper" can be installed over lpr. Would that work after having un-installed everything in CUPS except the cups-lib? The page tells you to keep that one. Would there be some advantage to a cups-wrapper?
Thanks again, Bob S.

Success !! After doing all of the right things, works ! Prints just fine, Open Office, Gimp, Web pages, etc. Still would like to know if there is any advantage/purpose of installing the "cups wrapper". Installed the scanner rpm and the fax rpm and they also seem to be working properly. Special thanks to Joe Morris who pointed me to that site, and a round of applause to Brother who have seen the Linux light. And my son, who has also seen the Linux light. He is impressed. Thanks to all. Bob S.
