[SLE] Wish list for SuSE 7.2 (what I see in Mandrake 8.0)
It may be too early, but I hope my wish list can come true. : ) a. Kernel 2.4.3 or later b. Auto config IDE burner (ML8 has done it, impressive) c. CUPS or better printing solution (ML8 got my HP710c to printer perfectly, this is the first time under Linux) d. Auto X configuration? (ML8 setup my 815 mobo graphic automatically) e. latest KDE f. latest Samba g. Galeon? nice to have it : ) h. Any other nice 'things'.... Sorry but ML8 is impressive at the first look, of course it also carry some problems: 1. no flash plug-in? 2. the file system look very different?? 3. mozilla crash! IMHO, it is worth taking a look but I am not going to use it for real work : ) SuSE is still my love. Dennis/sg

a. Kernel 2.4.3 or later 2.4.5pre1 is out now ...
b. Auto config IDE burner (ML8 has done it, impressive) That should be easy .. manual config is trivial to the point of being a nobrainer (add /sbin/modprobe ide-scsi to a relevant init.d file add hdX=ide-scsi to the relevant spot in /etc/lilo.conf rerun lilo, reboot)
c. CUPS or better printing solution (ML8 got my HP710c to printer perfectly, this is the first time under Linux)
Yup. Printing is still a bit awkward
d. Auto X configuration? (ML8 setup my 815 mobo graphic automatically) I think Sax/Sax2 doesn an excellent job. sax/sax2 works in more cases than autoXconfig. autoXconfig will have to second guess you on several issues (3D acceleration ? XF3 vs XF4 ? default resolution ? and what do you do if your monitor lies about it's capabilities.
Sax2 w/ sensible defaults would be nice though.

Yes, I got it done manually, but the automatic detection is nice. (lazy for this round : )
c. CUPS or better printing solution (ML8 got my HP710c to printer perfectly, this is the first time under Linux)

The CUPS in 7.1 is 'leaking' somehow, I'm unable to get it work with my stupid hp710c (GDI printer). The ML8 did it smoothly without any pain, and that's really impressive (to me : )

The ML8 just ask me what monitor and resolution, it did the rest for me including anti-aliasing ? (I think so) Though this is not very important, but 7.1 can only detect the 815 graphic as 810 and only allow 800x600/16 bits. ML8 got it done at 1024x768/16bits @ 70Hz.

Yes, count me in, I want that as well. : ) I am just suggesting for things that can be done to ease the user. This will have long term effect on getting more user onboard and blow the 'win' away. If it can be done by ML, I believe SuSE can do it better. ? Good day. Dennis/sg

I wonder, what TT fonts they are using (I haven't checked ML personally lately). This is our main problem - you simply can not get good-looking, free TrueType fonts that include a complete charset.

Well, no wonder - their XFree86 in 8.0 is newer than the one is SL 7.1. 7.2 will detect it, too. I dunno what TT fonts they are using (unable to name it, my ignorance : ), but personally, I like the 'Tahoma' font in Losedows. Can you make this magic in 7.2?

Well, there is some semi-automatic magic. It's called "fetchmsttfonts" and you can run it as root to grab some free TT font from the M$ web site. Since the download paths have slightly changed since the release of 7.1, I have attached the current version of this script. It's only 3.8K - I hope noone feels offended. Enjoy! Since you are accepting items for the next SuSE release... please, please do not forget to add Greek fonts this time :-) The rpms for Greek fonts were included in SuSE.6.4 (xfntgrk-3.3.6-27 and xfntgr-3.3.6-27) but unfortunately they were missing from SuSE.7.1.Pro (!). Also, please, fix the language changer (or whatever this is called) in KDE.2.xx, because although it changes flags (from English to Greek) it still impossible to type Greek chars. This is not a problem for overall system stability, but since I live in Greece it kind of makes KDE.2.xx unusable... Thank you for your attention. -Stathis. Lenz Grimmer wrote:

Here some comments from our developers about Greek support: [SNIP] It looks like the greek fonts in the xf86 package were dropped with the update to xf86 4.0 in SuSE 7.0. We should include them in the future again either within an extra package or create them (misc/75dpi/100dpi bdf fonts) during the build of xf86. BTW, I see iso8859-7 misc fonts in SuSE 7.x. Isn't iso8859-7 the same as Latin7, which is required for Greek users? [SNIP] [SNIP] I checked whether we have greek fonts recently - I found that we currently have the following Greek bitmap fonts:

First of all, thank you all for your prompt reply. To Togan Muftuoglu: Thanks a lot, but your suggestion didn't help me. To SuSE support (Lenz Grimmer and to the rest): Thank you. I was very surprised when I heared from you. I didn't expected it. I am pleased even if it didn't solve my problem:-) Let me now elaborate on my problem. 1) I can write Greek as well as see Greek in *all* windowmanagers. 2) My problem is : "How do I switch from English keyboard to a Greek one?" Personally I like fvwm better and that's the windowmanager I use. But I thought I might give KDE.2.xx a try. All went well, and I am very impressed by the quality of work that has been done, both from the KDE team as well as from the SuSE team (very good intergration). Then, I thought that I might as well use the language changer (you know, that little thing that changes flags every time you press it, kxkb is called as I later found out). Well, it changed flags all right, but that's about all it did. It didn't change my keyboard mapping, so I still couldn't type Greek. Problem is solved by using kikbd (from KDE.1.xx), but it is not an ellegant solution since kikbd does not get captured by kpanel and it is left as a "stray" window floating in my desktop which spoils the whole KDE.2.xx "experience". BTW, fvwm nicely captures kikbd into FvwmButtons. SuSE support, please read on... Lenz Grimmer wrote:

Yes, iso8859-7 is the same as Latin7. Yes, misc-*-iso8859-7 fonts are included. but none of the other fonts found in xfntgrk-3.3.6-27 and in xfntgr-3.3.6-27 are. That includes fonts such as helvetica, arial, times etc. BTW, I installed the above mentions rpms from SuSE.6.4 to a SuSE.7.1 system and everything works fine, so I can't say if it's the X server or not.

Well, for some basic stuff you are indeed covered. But I can't see why I should be so limited in font choices. Actually I don't have a choice, there is only one font available with the 7.1.Pro I bought. For xterm-based tasks, misc is fine. For almost everything else in inadequate. Thank you for your time, -Stathis.

You already can do this! Though it is hardly documented in the handbook... The only thing you need is ALICE (Automated Linux Installation and Configuration Environment). Development is not complete yet - but the framework is quite promising (IMHO). We have installed quite a few machines with it - everything up and configured including XFree (we had to do some extra stuff - but we hope our additions will make it into the next release - still fighting there :-)

Hi there,
I have it up and running since I installed 7.1. I haven't had any problems
whatsoever. I just installed it with the original install, ran the soffice
script and it worked perfectly. I do not think that I have ever had any
problems with StarOffice in any OS.
Regards,
Keith Gibbons.

Yup, worked out of the box for me, I've even upgraded to 2.4.2 and it still works. -- James Ogley, Unix System Administrator, Pinnacle.Net james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk +44 20 8731 3619 Listening to the sound of the coming rain... *********************************************************************** CONFIDENTIALITY. I run my SuSE 7.1 with the 2.4.0-4GB Kernel and it works fine. Also Star Office works OK. I used it yesterday to edit some RTF docs. Both of these are off the CD's -- Cheers, Jonathan "UNIX is a computer operating system, like Windows, but one which, unlike Windows, is more celebrated than cursed."
