renaming home directory
my login is "adagilson", but my main directory was called "victor" because there's a directory called "adagilson" for another user (it was a bad installation for adagilson). now intend to delete the current directory "adagilson" (no long used); and rename the directory called "victor" to "adagilson" as it should be. Is there any problem doing this? a. -- Adagilson Batista Bispo da Silva Bibliotecário FIOCRUZ-Centro de Pesquisa Aggeu Magalhães Fone 81 3302-6524
Sorry, I'm fearing that I could lost myself someway because I'm a linux newbie (just a month old :) could you give step-by-step detailed information? Remember user "adagilson" has /home/vitor (it's ok). And there's no user "victor" just a directory with this name that has been used for me (user "adagilson"). I need to delete directory "adagilson" (not user adagilson) as well there's no user "victor" do delete. thanks for helping, may God give you a happy and joyful new year. a. jaakko tamminen escreveu:
Hi
Maybe it would be easier to delete the user adagilson along with the directory first. Write down the user-number before delete!
Then rename the directory victor to adagilson, and change the user victor user-number to the number that was previously owned by adagilson.
This way You don't need to change the owner of the files in the adagilson directory.

Welcome...

BEFORE YOU START, make a backup of the directory. You need to be logged in as root to do this name changing, and user adagilson should NOT be logged in. Best way would be to use a text console: press CTRL-ALT-F1 to get a text login and login as root delete the directory /home/adagilson with: rm -r /home/adagilson Make very sure you type this correctly - once you press enter you cannot go back on it. [rm = remove, -r = recursive (i.e. delete all contents as well) type 'man rm' for a detailed explanation of the rm command] rename the /home/victor directory with: mv /home/victor /home/adagilson Look at 'man mv' for info. Check the ownership and permissions of the renamed directory: ls -l /home you should see: drwxr-xr-x N adagilson users [some other stuff] (N is a number) If you do, then all is well. If a user other than adagilson shows up, then change the user with: chown adagilson /home/adagilson you can look at man chown for more info. Then log out, and press ALT-F7 to return to the graphical login. You should then be able to login as usual, but with the newly renamed directory. Good luck Dylan

Hello Using SuSe 7.2 with Star-Office 5.2 and Mozilla 1.0, I am continually having problems carrying text across from Mozilla to the word-processor. When I press the insert icon in Star-Office, nothing happens. When I open Klipper, I can see the first few words of text, but the line is repeated with junk inset - so what I see is like this : Linux is a jolly good OS Linu@@ # a go##@ OS &ux is a %%ùù ??S and so on. If I try to click on the required text in the Klipper menu, the lines start spinning round like the cherries on a one-armed bandit. When I finally manage to hit the right line, it will, at last, paste into the WProcessor, but it can take a while. If I paste from Mozilla into Abiword or Lyx, everything seems to work fine, so it appears to be the Klipper/Star-Office coupling that leads to problems. All I can find on the net is someone referring to a similar problem using Wine, but no response was forthcoming. I could find nothing on the KDE site. I'm using kde 1.2. Has anyone any idea what is going on here? Best wishes Timothy Mason

I would suggest using the programm "usermod" .To learn about it open a console window and type "man usermod" read it and if you have further questions ask before trying things -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

Then better use mc instead: at least, it is easier. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
