I haven't seen this mentioned on this list yet, but the latest version of the blackdown version of java has been built with gcc 3.2. It's mozilla plugin works perfectly in gcc 3.2 builds of mozilla. The famed news ticker on news.bbc.co.uk is ticking nicely :) Get it from blackdown.org Just thought I'd mention it Anders

Yep, working here too... :o) Maybe Togan could put this in the unofficial SuSE FAQ? -- Microsoft Palladium: "Where the hell do you think YOU'RE going today?"

Just to confirm, I built phoenix nightly on a SuSE 8.1 system with gcc 3.2 and java plugin from blackdown j2sdk 1.4.1-01(gcc 3.2) was successfully recognized by phoenix. BBC news ticker is ticking and WebLogic console works! -Kastus

Thanks for the tip, Anders. I downloaded it from the Suse ftp site, along with Mozilla 1.2.1, and installed as per instructions. If the 'famed news ticker' is that which appears near the top of the BBC news page, it seems to be working (the status line shows the applet name, and the ticker ticks!). However, when I start mozilla, I do see the following error messages (repeated twice): LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so [/usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre/plugin/i386/ns600/libjavaplugin_oji.so: undefined symbol: __vt_17nsGetServiceByCID] LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /opt/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so [/opt/netscape/plugins/libflashplayer.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory] Should I be worried about these? All right, libflashplayer is not there, I guess I need to get a copy from somewhere if I want to use Flash, but it presumably has to have been compiled under gcc3 (?) What about libjavaplugin_oji? Is it no longer needed? The blackdown jre contains javaplugin_oji; is this the same thing? How do I stop mozilla looking at the 1.3.1 JRE? I don't see any conf file, and I can't uninstall it; (openOffice uses it)? Cheers, TonyB

No, that shouldn't be necessary. Get the latest version from http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/download/alternates/ IIRC the version on the SuSE cds had a security bug, so don't use that.

Just delete it from /opt/mozilla/plugins.

Many thanks, Anders, that's cleared it up. I now have a couple of error messages re Freetype, but they don't seem important; I'll look into them later. Now all I have to do is figure out how to import my 200 or so Konq bookmarks... Cheers, TonyB

...and you'll be letting the list know when you find out. :o) They're both XML based so a bit of XSL should do the trick. I for one would be interested if you find such a thing. -- Microsoft Palladium: "Where the hell do you think YOU'RE going today?"

I did that, and installed (tried both the rpm and the tarball). When I access a flash site (www.dooyoo.co.uk), mozilla dies. Running under strace shows: times({tms_utime=691, tms_stime=45, tms_cutime=38, tms_cstime=9}) = 697593 brk(0x8b55000) = 0x8b55000 stat64("/opt/mozilla/plugins/flashplayer.xpt", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0755, st_size=856, ...}) = 0 open("/opt/mozilla/plugins/flashplayer.xpt", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 38 read(38, "XPCOM\nTypeLib\r\n\32\1\2\0\3\0\0\3X\0\0\0\"\0\0\0u"..., 856) = 856 close(38) = 0 --- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) --- Is this a Suse problem? Where to report it? Cheers, TonyB

you don't need the old JRE any longer. Remove the link and name the link to the new java libjavaplugin_oji.so instead of javaplugin_oji.so. Otherwise it's possible that add-plugins.sh is called sometimes and create a new link to the old JRE. CU, Wolfgang Rosenauer
