SuSE-8.2 Professional or Professional Update
I dislike SuSE as much I like SuSE. Whenever update time comes, their wrapping of the product is so insincere and confusing. Their object is so clear: To allure people to buy their CDROMs. Fine. This time, I will buy one. There are two packagings that I need to know about. Why the hell, did they differentiate "Professional" from "Professional Update"? My concern is to update from SuSE-8.1 to 8.2, and I installed 8.1 from the scatch through their FTP copy. The reason I installed from scratch is because I was not able to get the necessary choice for update although they said that there is such a kernel option in the boot screen. That must be called a "BS". Thanks. G Hugh

Gee, it's amazing they want to make money off of all their time and effort..! (I think that was in their business plan)

The update 'usually' does not include the manuals and has more limited support (I think). Why it is priced as it is right now (same as regular PRO) I do not know. I think the price should be $49.95

I don't understand what you were trying to do above. There is usually an 'update installed system' option when you install from the CD's. Always has been. This is the second post I've seen commenting on the upgrade being priced the same as the full package, so I went and checked "right now". According to this page: http://store.suse.com/dr/v2/ec_MAIN.Entry10?SP=10024&PN=16&V1=39890&xid=40017&DSP=&CUR=840&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=61326 the price is indeed $49.95 for the upgrade [this is the U.S. "store" site] If that link doesn't seem to work, I got to this by going to "store.suse.com" [which does a 5-second redirect]. The "opening page" lists 4 products, of which only one is the "pro" version [they don't even show the "personal" version on this page] In the left-hand "navbar" choose "SuSE Linux products" which takes you to the above page and lists, 10 at a time, various packages that can be purchased online and direct from SuSE. Someone commented that "it looks like the pre-order isn't available until mid april", but that is due to the lack of punctuation. It actually reads: PRE-ORDER [in bold] available mid april [in italics] which can either mean that pre-ordering isn't available until april, or that it isn't available until april so the only thing you can do now is pre-order. Since people have reported successfully (pre) ordering this, the latter "meaning" is probably more accurate... - -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) Comment: http://osnut.homelinux.net/TomEmerson.asc iD8DBQE+hISiV/YHUqq2SwsRAlkBAJ9wV2nADVuUBqaEXsK93D9tLEaxiQCgkFeH T+7PntjVgUn1Pewf2DgraKo= =jEwD -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Same disks but Update doesn't have all the manuals. There's probably also a difference in support offered. Newbies need the manuals, veterans don't: so its reasonable to offer two versions, though it would be nice if SuSE were a bit more explicit about what the difference is. -- JDL

Interesting interpretation. I thought it was to offer to people, for a fee, the ability to avoid downloading several CDs worth of software. And to, optionally, get documentation and support for a limited time. Don't quite know where I get that idea from though.

Seems to me their site (http://www.suse.com/us/private/products/suse_linux/i386/prices.html) said something like ------ SuSE Linux 8.1 Professional US $ 79.95 5 CDROMs, 2 DVDs, 2 manuals (Administration Guide, User Guide), 90 days of installation support SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional Update US $ 49.95 5 CDROMs, 2 DVDs, 1 manual (Administration Guide), 60 days of installation support -------- Again, I have no idea what the difference might be, but I image the reduction of 1 manual and 30 days of support could account for the difference. Although my understanding could be off base, I'd guess that 'Update' might just mean the contents of the CD/DVD, (possibly because the admin has experience and doesn't need the help) as compared to the method of installation.

So, from the way I read this - you obtained the 'free' version by downloading, thereby avoiding paying for such inconsequentials as support, installation assistance, and documentation. Now it is therefore somehow their fault that you are not able to figure out how to install they way you expect. And since it seems to be their fault, you appear tio feel free to imply name calling or questioning the quality. Interesting. I guess it's all in the way one looks at things. Or possibly in one's expectations. SHiB /Hans

This comes up every time there's a new version. I totally agree that SuSE could do with making the difference clearer (but that would reduce sales of the full Pro edition...) so: The Pro upgrade is identical in every way to the full Pro version except that it has fewer manuals (and possibly shorter support - I've never tried this). It *can* be used for a fresh install and contains all software etc. Basically, if you're used to SuSE, there's no point buying the full version unless you really want the manuals. Looks like a web site issue - including their webmaster on this reply. (What do you call this kind of problem? It's not really a 'bug' in the traditional programming sense.)

Hey SuSE .... please fix the inconsistency around the pricing for the 8.2 Update. Some of your site says the update is $49.95, other parts of the site say the update is $79.95 (see page/link shown above) Thanks for fixing this quickly A loyal, but easily confused, fan /Hans
I want to upgrade a number of machines to Suse 8.2 ASAP. The upgrade to is available on the web for US$50 but to get it to Australia, freight is another US$41 That comes out to more than the AUS$180 for the full boxed distro here. To download the distro costs me way more than that again. Whether it's my bosses money or mine, I'd rather give it to Suse. What I want is an airlifted copy of the CDs hot off the burner. No manuals no box. I don't care about support, never used it/ never installed a system simple enough to claim it/ never even bothered to register. I am prepared to pre-order and even pay a US$10 premium for the assurance that my copy will go out in the first wave. I don't really need the 7 CD set, only one DVD need be posted. That's if Suse (or someone on this list) could write a utility that will split the DVD version into the CD ISOs. I do need a way to make CDs for installs on CD only machines. So, putting rough numbers on, what I propose is: US$40 + postage ($10?) for express DVD. US$30 + postage ($10?) for 2nd wave DVD. US$40 + postage ($20?) for DVD+CD set. Come on Suse, here's a profitable niche. Come on Suse enthusiasts, if this fits your needs mail me (off list) and Suse Sales. I didn't forward this to sales. Maybe feedback@suse.de is a better place? If you get a lot of response to your post you can add my name to any "all these people agree" email you send. And I absolutely agree. For those who don't need the box, manual or support, there's no financially sensible option. Those guys who sell all the other distros for ten dollars - the cost of the media, plus a couple of bucks for the time - make a modest living for a reason. There's a lot of Linux people out there who want the convenience of the disk set, without the expense of buying a package of things they don't need. I'm generally in favour of SuSE's business model, but there's definitely a piece missing. If they're not going to let others make 10 bucks a time for the basic disk set, they should do it themselves as a service to their regular users. -- "...our desktop is falling behind stability-wise and feature wise to KDE ...when I went to Mexico in December to the facility where we launched gnome, they had all switched to KDE3." - Miguel de Icaza, March 2003

You can get (pre-order) an upgrade of v8.2 Professional from Linux System Labs (www.lsl.com.au), as I just have, for $AU115 + postage. You can ring them on (03) 9857 5918 and ask for Glenn. Cheers. -- Understanding only begins with the act of perception.

Are you sure of that? I ask because I paid $AUD150 or so for 8.0 upgrade pro last year from lsl. I can't see that the prices would have dropped :) Glenn
