Scsi card choice...
I need to setup an HP scanner at home (its kind of old, like 1997, when the P2 300 was top of the line) and was wondering if those cheaper Adaptec cards would do? What I mean by is cheap is *cheap* (hey I posted my wonderful bay area salary of 32.5K a year lol) as my wife wants her scanner up and running (not on her win98 computer, she has a Duron micro-ATX board, already pretty full). Any recomendations? As its an external device there is no absolute need for internal, but why waste the money? I may, sometime in the future (after payrise...) add some SCSI stuff to it. Matt

I been using a Tekram DC-315U SCSI-2 PCI card (50-pin internal, 50-pin Sub-D external) for my internal SCSI drive and external CDROM drive, under Linux and Windows. It typically sells for about ~ $29 USD. As long as you don't need a bootable BIOS to boot a hard drive, this is an excellant card. The driver is already in the kernel, and the earliest kernel I used it with was 2.2.13. I have two of these cards for the past year without any problems. Christopher Reimer
I just took an HP ScanJet 3P off my new Win2000 install at work because Win2000 wouldn't recognize the PROPRIATARY scsi card that came with the scanner. I tried using a Symbios scsi card to no avail. The software wouldn't work. JLK On Thursday 08 February 2001 13:35, Matthew wrote:

Ack, That Hp model almost matches with my Wife's, will it work under Linux or am I in for a looonnggg evening? (When I would rather be playing Heavy Gear 2 for Linux). Matt On Thu, 8 Feb 2001, Jerry Kreps wrote:

You might want to check out this SANE page: http://www.mostang.com/sane/sane-backends.html Just because a scanner doesn't work on Windows 2000, doesn't mean that it work in Linux. I got a 5GB tape drive for free from work because Windows 2000 barfed on the ISA controller card, but it works fine under Linux. ;) Christopher Reimer On Thu, 8 Feb 2001, Matthew wrote:

You are right...Got a Kodak 580C camera and mislaid its windows software, called there support line and was given this quote: $19.99 for the CD and then shipping...Asked more about shipping which was given to me as $20! Luckily found the CD, but tried gPhoto instead and it worked great. The rep did not even mention that I could use gPhoto, basically told me I had to use there software. I envy that 5GB tape drive.... Just got myself the Tekram, looks fitting for my needs and a little more. Matt On Thu, 8 Feb 2001, Christopher D. Reimer wrote:

Don't envy that tape drive too much. Took me six weeks to figure out how to properly set up that ISA card because I was spoiled rotten on PCI technology. Getting older hardware to work under Linux can be an excercise in patience. :) Christopher Reimer On Thu, 8 Feb 2001, Matthew wrote:

Of course! You're talking about Linux now, not W2K ;-) http://www.mostang.com/sane/sane-backends.html A good scsi card is all you need. JLK

Got it all installed and it kind of works... Would give me weird gimp error (this is xsane) and then die, however after a restart it worked fine in Ximian. Under KDE it crashed... Getting there :-) Matt On Thursday 08 February 2001 09:04 pm, Jerry Kreps wrote:
