Hi Folks, I've got a conundrum going on here. I have a Xerox 6180 color laser printer here that's about 15-years old. Recently it started to print a blue streak down one side of the paper and to add speckles at random. This is likely the cyan toner cartridge that's leaking, but the darned thing costs $150 or so. But if I bought a new one it might not fix the problem! So I thought about just buying a new printer, maybe one with a built- in scanner. The Brother MFC-L3780CDW looks nice, but will all the functions work with Leap? Does anyone have any experience with that printer? So both paths have risk. The problem might not be the cyan cartridge in the Xerox printer, and the Brother might not be compatible with Leap! What am I to do! Any suggestions will be appreciated! BTW, I've got a Canon ink-jet printer that never did work with Linux. I had to run Windows in Virtualbox to use it. Not particularly satisfying, and now even that doesn't work. Regards, Lew

My printing problems ended when I bought my second HP m252, the first one got ruined by shitty 3rd party toners. The HP toner costs twice what it should IMO but I've had this for many years now, problem free. HTH.

I did a quick google search for linux drivers for this printer, and found one result on the Mint forums which says the drivers are already in Linux. However, not all functions are necessarily supported. That writer only mentions one such function, some toner saver. To get support for all such functions, you will need to use the drivers off the Brother website. Another writer on the Fedora forums says that scanimage detects the scanner function with the Linux-supplied drivers, so this is covered without resorting to the Brother drivers. I was unable to find anything openSUSE-specific, but I would expect if it works out-of-box with Fedora, it should also work out-of-box with Leap. My suggestion is to install the printer/scanner with the Linux-supplied drivers, then test out its functionality to see if there are any unsupported features you feel are essential for you. If there are, then grab the Brother drivers from: https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadtop.aspx?c=ca&lang=en&prod=mfcl3780cdw_us_as Note that there is one rpm for the scanner that lets you scan using the scan button on the machine -- sometimes a very handy thing to have. I only ever tried it out once -- somehow it fires up xsane and scans your document with the push of one button. Very handy indeed.

If all functions are supported, I can not say. Drivers are here: https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=mfcl3780cdw_us_as&os=127 Stephan

Maybe because using "old" libs; so you have to install in Leap 15.6 also libnsl1 for scanning. Leap 15.6 is using libnsl2 as standard.

We went through all this once before, when my scanner disappeared with the upgrade to 15.6. The Brother drivers use libnsl1

I know WELL that Brother MFC-L3780CDW is a multifunctional machine. Whoever suggested that you did not? I certainly didn't. You basically told Stephan Hemeier that he didn't know what he was talking about, when in fact it is you who did not: cups may not need

I've only expressed my doubts about its print driver at its core, and that's all I'm really saying about it. I don't recall seeing that here. Could you summarize please?

I mean, I understand that you need liibnls2 files if you want to use MFC-L3780CDW as a scanner, but I've never denied that. I accept that the main use of Lew is as a printer, so I focused on the printer function and gave it a mail. If he is going to use it primarily as a scanner, that's a different story. It was a one time payment fairly priced and got my printer working perfectly till I ditched it for a laser from hp. I forget the name of the drivers, could be "turboprint", but I don't remember. And I don't know if they are still doing support for newer Canon printers. I refused later to buy a Canon camera for that reason, even though they are good cameras. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
