hi, having a little trouble with xmms hwere. it's playing all files (mp3, wave) with no sound and superfast. i'm pretty sure that my soundcard is working correctly; it plays test messages in the YaST2->Hardware->Sound. i have read the FAQ and i'm definitely *not* using diskwriter as my output. there are no wave files in the output directory either. i tried both the eSound and OSS outputs. is there any way to sort of see what xmms is doing? any other suggestions are very welcome, too. thanks. -- xiaolei li

Are the rights of /dev/audio and/or /dev/dsp set correctly? Do you play mp3 or wave from xmms' s playlist? If yes, have you mounted the directories where the files are stored?
is there any way to sort of see what xmms is doing?
Start xmms within a terminal emulation program like xterm or konsole. Best regards, Ming-Che -- Kmail 1.4.1 - Gentoo 1.1a Linux - ICQ#: 126097979 Registered Linux User #241507 at http://counter.li.org
I just saw this link, so forgive me if you tried this. Go to Yast2>Hardware>Soundcard>Volume. See that it isn't set to 0. Hope it helps. Harry G On Sun June 16 2002 1:22 pm, Ming-Che Lee wrote:

Try playing an mp3 with something like mpg123 first to see whether it is indeed an XMMS problem. Charles -- "By golly, I'm beginning to think Linux really *is* the best thing since sliced bread." (By Vance Petree, Virginia Power)

when i try to play an mp3 with mpg123, it says ... Playing MPEG stream from 05-jejune-2000_miles-rh.mp3 ... MPEG 1.0 layer III, 192 kbit/s, 44100 Hz stereo [8:33] Decoding of 05-jejune-2000_miles-rh.mp3 finished. the entire thing finishes in about 10 seconds. it looks eerily like it's using the diskwriter output but i don't see any wavefiles. i've also set the outputs of mpg123 to both /dev/audio and /dev/dsp0 and still no sound. help? thank you very much, xiaolei
Has anyone here gotten their Soundblaster Live! to work with an SMP system under SuSE 8.0? When I left it in a box on my most recent install, somehow it's installation botched my modules.conf so that every line resulted in an error. i.e., no modules were loaded.

I have a similar problem after upgrading from 7.2 to 8.0. I'm using gramofile to record LP's to wav files. Under 7.2, everything was working fine. Now, when I play the wav files that I just recorded under 8.0, they sound like when playing a 33 rpm LP with the turntable set to 78 rpm's. My sound card is working because I can play wav files I made when I had 7.2 installed. Any ideas? Thank you. - -- Alfredo J.
