There is no ftp in the version on the CD/dvd. When the announcement of the ftp version was made it was also stated that you had to use the boot disk from suse's ftp server. Either the boot floppies or the boot.iso located there. There is also an excellent readme describing how to do the install either from suse's ftp, one of the mirrors or from your own local lan if you mirror the installation directory. SuSE's knowledgebase also has a description on how to perform network installs. //Anders
With prior releases, I was in the habit of installing from CD, but then changing source of installation to FTP, to make sure I was pulling the latest update, whenever I went to install additional packages. Since the FTP version of 8.0 was published, I have been expecting that YOU will replace my YAST2 with an FTP-capable one. To date, this hasn't happened. has anyone figured out which of the myriad of yast2 .rpm's contains the 'change source of installation' module, so I can manually update yast2 to restore my FTP installation ability? I sent this a minute too soon. I just did another search of the SDB (keywords FTP INSTALL), and found a new article which describes the procedure. Unfortunately, the article directs me to download ALL the rpm's in both the yast1 and yast2 directories, and then let rpm update only those which are already installed. I've got a slow modem connection, and it pains me to think of spending time downloading something that won't be installed. I've tried several times, but haven't been able to come up with a working rpm command line which will update any/all packages found in a FTP directory, so that the process could be done with just two commands. Has anyone else figured out this one? On Mon, 29 Jul 2002, Rick Green wrote:

Rick, I use apt and apt4rpm, with synaptic. This allows you to select the RPMs you wish to update. I select "Installed" form the RPM list, select the ones to upgrade, and away it goes. There was a thread on apt a few months ago. This may solve your problem. HTH. Terence

Wouldn't be nice to visit our mothers from time to time? I mean, we have SuSE 8.0 from SuSE. We should visit them more often, at least the SuSE Support Database section ;) If you go to www.suse.com and select Support Database on the left, then History - Recent changes, you will see on 16th of July (2 weeks ago) the following article: Adding FTP to YaST2 as Installation Source For your convenience, here is the link: http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/yast2_ftp80.html Have fun, Dan. -- Binaries might die, but source code lives forever
