Re: [SLE] How does one pronounce "SUSE"

Actually, SuSE is a German acronym, but I don't remember what it stands for, except the "u" is "und". I looked in a pre-Novell handbook, but could not find the words. In German, one would have said ZOO-zeh. Now, the official use is SUSE--the German is gone, and so, of course, is the acronym. I think most of us pronounce it "Suzy" as in the Everly Brothers' song, "Wake Up Li'l Suzy." I guess that is the same as the MJs, but I never heard of them, so I don't know. --doug -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. The name "S.u.S.E.", shortened to just "SuSE" in October 1998, was originally an acronym for the German phrase "Software- und System-Entwicklung" ("Software and system development"). The company's name was changed to SUSE Linux after Novell's purchase and "SUSE" does not officially stand for anything any more. There is unofficial rumour that the name is an analogy with the German computer pioneer Konrad Zuse. (Source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuSE )

I believe the best English speaking pronunciation comes out sounding like Soos-a This is not strictly true to the original German pronunciation but it possible as close as can be. The second 's' is not drawn out in a 'ssss' sound but a pronounced with a simeple 's' sound, clipped. -- ============================================== I am only human, please forgive me if I make a mistake it is not deliberate. ============================================== Xmas may be over but, PLEASE DON'T drink and drive you'll make it to the next one that way. Heh, a few years ago I emailed support before Novell bought them to ask how to do it, and if you ever watch Revolution OS, Linus says it: "Szew-szuh" Is how you do it in English. In German the S is pronounced similar to a "z" is in English. So you guys were all close. Just say this: SzewSzuh, it should be proper no mater what because in German if a word ends like "SUSE" or "Deine" the E at the end as an "uhh" sound too it.

Here in Armenia we usually pronounce it like "Sooseh" (with strong "oo", like in word "moon"), and what is funny in our language phrase "soos, eh" means "Keep silence(or shutup), at last" -- Sergey Mkrtchyan Scientific Researcher Department of Molecular Physics, Faculty of Physics, Yerevan State University, Armenia Tel: (374-10) 55-43-41 Fax: (374-10) 57-76-89

That's nice. I wonder where houghi got that. (He's from Belgium and very active on the usenet lists.) This brings up a question, however (sorry to steal the thread). When I clicked the link, Amarok opened up and played the file. I don't mind Amarok, but I figure there's some system-based player that can do it without needing a UI. 'apropos mp3' showed 'lame'. But one can play *.au files with 'cat f.au > /dev/audio' (mime-type: audio/basic). If there is a utility that can convert a sound-file to *.au files, then it would be simple... Cheers, Leen
