Hello people and a fine 2004 for all. Finnaly i got new kernel 2.6.1 working with my uscc-card, thanks to help of Jeroen, but have another problems: how can enable some services to work under new kernel, like hotplug, cron, sshd etc etc etc. Splash also does not work as well alsa and nvidia driver do not work. My dist is SuSE 9.0 pro. Any help will be welcome. David Quental

I reported this problem to the kernel mailing list, but got zero responses. I've noticed that the services say they have failed, but they are up and working, e.g 1557 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/sshd -o PidFile=/var/run/sshd.init.pid 1524 ? S 0:00 /usr/sbin/rsyncd --daemon ----------------------------------- There is a new hotplug available which seems to work partially.... It needs a directory named /sys -------------------------------------------------------- /etc/hotplug/usb_host.agent: line 144: [: too many arguments <notice>exit status of (hotplug) is (0) <notice>start services (resmgr) cat: /sys//class/usb_host/usb2/bNumConfigurations: No such file or directory --------------------------------------------- <notice>Starting rsync daemonfailed --------------------------------------------- With the latest 2.6.1-mm2, alsa fails, but I have a script to do the insmod's and that works OK from the command line. For the nvidia driver 5328, I've downloaded the patches from http://www.minion.de, run the NVIDIA kernel script with --extract-only, done the patches and make install. This means I have to come up in runlevel 3 and do stuff as "insmod nvidia" and "insmod usblp" say the modules can't be found (used to work with 2.6.0), then do init 5, AOK after that......... insmod /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/usb/class/usblp.ko insmod /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hi to all. Did some experiencies with kernel-2.6.1-mm1 and from ax25 part is working fine with my uscc-card (thanks help of Jeroen). Nvidia works fine too with diff from minion, hotplug does not work like i like, alsa same problem, have problems in iptables but aparently it works. But will wait for new releases of kernel-2.6 to put my system like i want. Best regards to all and thanks for help. David Quental

I just installed the 2.6.1 kernel-default rpm. However, I can't use it as the boot fails. It seems to fail to fail just after harddisk initializing. It is hard to see what happens but it looks like the boot process complains about bad mem.... or something like that. After the rpm has been installed there anything special to be done, which I may have forgotten? I had the 2.6.0 kernel happilly running before. I would like to go back to the 2.6.0 kernel, but I don't have the rpm anymore :( I have the files: System.map-2.6.0-0-default, vmlinux-2.6.0-0-default.gz, vmlinuz-2.6.0-0-default around. Is it possible to install these (which are needed?) and get a 2.6.0 kernel back, or should the libs and related files be changed too? -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

Is this a problem with the kernel, the rpm, something else? Is it sufficient to report the problem here and will Gerd Knorr be informed about it. Or should he be notified personnally? -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

I think maybe should. (As I remember, in GRUB was keyboard not fully functional with this kernel, so I could not change parameters or select different kernel - but some keys were working, like esc, spacebar) Please add my parameters too: Motherboard Chaintech 9LIF3 Processor Celeron 2,1 GHz Memory 256 + 512 MB (memory chips are different type, first 266 MHz, second 300 MHz) Integrated Intel video and audio etc. SuSE 9.0 ain

It is the same thing here. Just after the message : Freeing unused kernel memory I get lots of lines : mm/memory.c : 100 bad pmb xxxxxxxxx and I have to reboot with the previous kernel.

I did report to Gerd Knorr a few minutes ago. Catimimi.

Did you delete the 2.6.0 kernel? Whenever I've updated the kernel, I'd leave the old one in place an update the boot loader. That way, it's a simple matter to go back. You can even have multiple kernels available for booting.

I prepared the boot loader and to my big surprise 2.6.0 did not boot anymore after the upgrade :( I verified the correct working of the boot loader for 2.6.0 and it worked. The reason that 2.6.0 is clear however, when using rpm the older version is replaced with the newer one !-/ -- Richard Bos Without a home the journey is endless

It might be that sshd fails for ipv6 but runs for ipv4. the option "-4" between the quotes in file /etc/sysconfig/ssh may help. Its possible for sshd to be compiled to only do ipv4 or to do both and I think this got changed somewhare along the line so that it now tries to do both. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

It's not just sshd, it's quite a few other things that work OK, like apache2, mysql, etc., ipv6 is also started. Someone a while ago suggested it may be a race condition peculiar to the SuSE distro. When I posted to the kernel mailing list, I was hoping that someone would at least come back saying they were running SuSE 9.0 and 2.6 from kernel.org without seeing similar messages. Sometime, perhaps later today, I shall build a kernel on my Mandrake 9.2 box to see what happens. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer Linux Only Shop.
