[opensuse] Slightly OT: Like Apple Remote Desktop.
Hey gang, I've been administering a medium sized linux/osx network. On the OSX network Apple has this great tool called Remote Desktop that allows me to view/control workstations, install software, run scripts and generate a plethora of reports. I've been administering the linux side via scripts for the most part, but I'm sure someone must have made a tool like Remote Desktop for Linux by now. Any ideas? Krdc works great for me. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFHH/bYCF89bP00wLgRAuOQAKCgEyaycg7jjSBBA39tfyCLUaV10gCgkYM4 RN5dMcbfUT3au5dfdMOEVeE= =ZODp -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

It works great for remote desktop-ing to windows machines, but to Linux machines I use NX (nomachine version, from the site, they provide suse rpms), its free for Linux (windows client aswell) and its much smoother than VNC. Also, it uses ssh by default to tunnel the remote session, so its secure. I just stumbled on this on the kdedev site. http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/3071 Hans E-mail Disclaimer http://www.sunspace.co.za/emaildisclaimer.htm -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There's webmin if you want to use a web browser. http://www.webmin.com Suse has an option in Yast for Remote Administration. http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Remote_Administration Or just ssh -X to the box and launch whatever gui tool you like, or admin from shell. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I could be wrong, but those tools are fairly limited compared to what he wants to do with Apple Remote Desktop, including things like cloning (imaging), inventory, automatic application pushes, etc. The closest thing that I'm aware of for ARD, and better than ARD in my experience, is Novell's ZENworks product line wich includes a Linux Management feature. There are however, many free, open-source products out there that do some of the functions of ARD/ZENworks. But it gets to be a chore to manage multiple products to do the combined featureset that exists in ARD or ZENworks. I've worked with ARD for the last few years, and only recently has ARD begun to catch up with the feature set available in ZENworks. It's a damn shame Novell never made it OSX capable. But how can you dislike ARD's price point ($500 for an enterprise site-wide license)? ARD 3.x is getting pretty close to a ZEN-like experience. :-) -- ---Bryen--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'll take a look at these, many thanks.

I have used Zenworks in the past. I used to administer a department at a university and we had adopted the use of Zenworks in my time there. It is very extensive in scope and the price point has never been all that inviting especially for an environment like ours with a large renderfarm and less than 100 workstations. Do you want to administer the Linux box or other boxes. Another poster mentioned RDC (Remote Desktop Connection) which works with Windows workstations. You can always use VNC. I think there's a way to get into a linux box remotely, but I'm not sure how. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Linux has VERY powerful Remote Desktop capabilities. You can have as many users connected simultaneously as you like. There are many methods for Linux. First, you can always have remote desktops, simply by enabling XDMCP. Then there's stuff like VNC and if you use ssh, with X forwarding, you can run any graphical app. Compared to Linux, other operating systems are primitive! -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
In the opensuse education desktop applications list is iTALC http://en.opensuse.org/Education_Desktop_Applications#Desktop_Applications_f... It is basically ARD without the imaging tools. On Wed, 2007-10-24 at 21:41 -0400, todd@sohovfx.com wrote:
