Ben Rosenberg: Your response was clear and succint. Thanks. I'm sorry, but I'm still in the thick of the forest (the Black Forest?) On //linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm it says, "Some rough steps to get the Advanced Package Tool (APT) operational at a SuSE system." Rough steps? That's the understatement of the year! I d'd and installed /apt-0.5.4cnc7-2cl, then I went back to fetch /libapt. There, I only found /libapt-0.3.19CVS. I d'd and installed it. Then, I issued apt-get update. I got the message that /libapt is "obsolete." Searching for libapt, Google sent me to Pbone, which has /libapt-0.5-0.5.4cnc8, but that doesn't work for a bundle of dependencies. Even worse was sourceforge with /libapt-0.5-devel-static-0.5.4cnc8. I could live with /libapt-0.3.19CVS **if** I could undo the /apt-0.5.4 and install /apt-0.3.19CVS, but I get the error, "package apt-0.5.4cnc7-2cl (which is newer than apt-0.3.19CVS-20011212) is already installed." I feel like the motorist who was going on a one-way street and comes to a fork with three signs: no U turn, no left turn, no right turn.
Thanks, again.

You should also download the apt-devel package of the same build, and while you are there download the synaptic package.
then I went back to fetch /libapt.
That package has been replaced with apt-devel. There is info on the site stating this. ;-)

You will also need to set up your /etc/apt/sources.list file with the correct info for your version of SuSE. The correct info is on the web site. You should maybe choose which 'groups' you want to check on. Then, you can signal to get in the fast lane, and issue apt-get update and see it work. If you do this in an xterm, you can see if there are any error messages. If there is none, try making an icon to synaptic, with the exec line being "kdesu /usr/sbin/synaptic" (assuming you use kde), then click on the icon, enter your root password at the prompt, and enjoy a pretty nice gui for apt-get. From the web page: SuSE-8.0 users are encouraged to install the newer apt version (apt-0.5.4). APT version 0.5.4 can be downloaded from here: http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm/apt-0.5.4 Store the contents of 1 of the following urls (depending on your system) in the file: /etc/apt/sources.list; component list for SuSE-8.0: http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/suse/apt/SuSE/8.0-i386/examples/sources.list.FT... . as richard bos guides :- Retrieve and install the rpms apt-0.5.4cnc...i386.rpm and apt-devel-0.5.4cnc...i386.rpm Please note, the package apt-devel-0.5.4 replaces rpm package libapt-0.3.19. To check that you've installed the correct rpms for apt-0.5.4, the following command can be executed: rpm -qa | grep -E "^apt-0|^apt-devel-0". This must result in 2 rpms called: apt-0.5.4..... and apt-devel-0.5.4.... ....................................
