[opensuse] OpenSuse 10.2 can not install
Hi all, I have burnt OpenSuse 10.2 on a DVD to install it on my laptop but it seems that the DVD is not bootable! I have checked everything and all should be OK but it is not booted from DVD to be able to install it on my laptop. Can anybody help? BTW I used ISO image burned using DVDDecrytor. Did you check the boot order in BIOS? Maybe your DVD drive is located after your HD. In this case, your laptop will never boot from it.
Thanks,
D.

Did you compare the md5sum for the downloaded image? Maybe the image itself was corrupted. Also. I have seen such a problem with some (older) laptops - for some reason they will not boot from a DVD but will happily boot from a CD. Well I checked it on my PC too but it doesn't work. For your information the files on the DVD are: media.1 (folder) suse (folder) ARCHIVES (zip file) ChangeLog content content.asc directory.yast INDEX (zip file) installation (xml file) Is-Ir (zip file) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Adding up to this, I had the same problem a few days ago, problem was the reader on the unit couldn't read at the speed I burned the DVD, maximum was speed 8 as it's an older dvd reader and the dvd was burned at speed 16. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I don't know. I burned it using my DVD writer and opened it with the same drive. I think there is no such problem while I have not had any problem with write/read speed. It wasn't successful. I downloaded a new image from another mirror server but I still have same problem. I can see the contents of my DVD on both machines (Windows and Ubuntu) but it is not bootable! I used Language Add-on CD and burned it on DVD, I am not sure if it can cause the problem. I am downloading the DVD of installation media for last chance. If it won't work I have to keep Ubuntu which does not meet my needs. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Could it be that this is *not* a bootable image. IIANM, you need one of the *CD1* images to boot. That shouldn't be bootable. That is like a driver disk/cd/iso in that it should be readable/loadable but isn't the main boot disk to run the install. You need http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.2/iso/cd/openSUSE-10.2-GM-i386-... as well as the other 4 for the distribution. I believe CD1 and CD2 are bootable. The Addon CD is not bootable, it just contains more language packs. For install, you need the CD1. Also, it is a bad idea to burn cd image onto DVD media. I'm not sure this will work OK. Either download the install DVD, or get all install CDs (incl. the addon), or, you can do a network install, if you download the mini-iso. You are right. Sorry, I am not that silly, but I think the information on download page is a little bit confusing at least for a newbie. It now works, thanks everybody. Now, I have some questions: 1. I saw a very cool 3D modeling which was offered in OpenSuse where the user could see other windows by rotating a cube. It was very cool but I think it is available only in KDE. I am more comfortable with GNOME. Is it available in GNOME too? 2. How OpenSuse works with Wireless cards? I had very big problems with Ubuntu to detect my card and at last I installed ndiswrapper, but after a while everything began to be messy and my Wireless card didn'r work at all! My Wireless card is Broadcom. 3. As I see, OpenSuse supports RPM packages, but I think it has its own package manager too. Am I right? 1. I saw a very cool 3D modeling which was offered in OpenSuse where the user could see other windows by rotating a cube. It was very cool but I think it is available only in KDE. I am more comfortable with GNOME. Is it available in GNOME too?
AFAIK, this should work with gnome. The name is compwiz, read on opensuse site for it.
2. How OpenSuse works with Wireless cards? I had very big problems with Ubuntu to detect my card and at last I installed ndiswrapper, but after a while everything began to be messy and my Wireless card didn'r work at all! My Wireless card is Broadcom.
So far Suse was best in working with wireless cards out of the box. It detected my laptop's Broadcom and configured it. Exceptions apply of course.
3. As I see, OpenSuse supports RPM packages, but I think it has its own package manager too. Am I right?
RPM is only the framework. There are a lot of package manager, which work with that framework - rpm itself, YaST (suse's one), smart, yum, there is also apt-get for RPMs. I use smart, but before that I used apt-get. All are available from opensuse install cd. how did you burn the dvd? did you burn as the image to disk? or you made a data disk that contained the iso? I hope you burned the image to disk.
I have burnt OpenSuse 10.2 on a DVD to install it on my laptop but it seems that the DVD is not bootable! I have checked everything and all should be OK but it is not booted from DVD to be able to install it on my laptop. Can anybody help? BTW I used ISO image burned using DVDDecrytor.
No. I burned the image correctly because there files on the DVD which could be seen, The only problem was that the DVD was not bootable. Anyway, the DVD version didn't work for me but CDs when I downloaded one by one did work fine. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I think you did all you could do (all I think of anyway :-). But I'll ask you a bit more: now you have 10.2 installed (or at least a cd bootable), please use the YaST "verify the media" on the faulty dvd (and on the problematic computer), I wonder if the problem is with the dvd reader incompatibility with the dvd media or anything else. If the test fails, the dvd is faulty, if is succeed there is a software problem (I guess) jdd -- http://www.dodin.net Le manuel d'optique de Lucien Dodin http://lesprismes.free.fr/optique/index.html -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
