Does SuSE have any plans to make changes in this area (inet config files)? -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

What changes do you recommend?
I don't have any recommendation, but this is one area where SuSE and RH differ. It doesn't appear to be covered by the LSB. I was just wondering if SuSE had any plans in this area, expecially with United Linux -- I'm not sure how the other UL partners handle this area. -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

I'm still not sure what you are asking. If you're wondering why we default to inetd instead of xinetd it's because of xinetd's security history. inetd isn't great, but it hasn't had any remote exploits (it is vunerable to DoS attacks though) either. -- -ckm

OK, thanks. Reason I asked was that in the past I have had minor difficulty transferring a set of apps developed on SuSE to a Yellow Dog system. One of the small thorns was the difference between ineted & xinetd. Took a while to get dhcp, ftp, etc all working right. I was hoping that all distros would converge in this area but was disappointed when i found that LSB didn't address this. -- Robert C. Paulsen, Jr. robert@paulsenonline.net

We include xinetd with a complete xinetd.conf, it just doesn't get installed by default. -- -ckm
