[opensuse] New install questions
Excuse my noviceness but i just got a HP Pavilion a6313w with a 640gig drive or so it was billed on the box as a 640gig drive. When i go to install 10.3, yast says it is 2 drives of 320gig. I take the cover off and it is in fact 2 320gig drives. My question is what is everybody doing in this situation? Raid 1 (i don't even know if this thing can do raid) or 1 drive is mounted as root with a swap and the other is mounted as /home? I would think that if 1 drive is mounted as "/" with the swap on it, there is alot of wasted space (does / need 320gigs). If raid 1, could someone post a doc link as to how to do software raid in linux. I also have a question about the 15 in 1 reader: does 10.3 find and work with card readers? I would go with a raid 1, partition it with swap, / and /home, and since you have space, maybe a backup

Caveats, make sure Grub is installed to MBR of the BIOS boot disk. Other than that, it is quite straight forward. To be able to boot from either disk, look for RAID+GRUB.html howto.

Yes, quite well. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Given that this is a desktop PC, and assuming you don't need 640Gb space, I would certainly opt for RAID1. For setting it up, just use YaST. There is an issue in 10.3 with lilo and RAID1, but it might be fine with GRUB, I don't know. It's easily fixed, but it means creating the RAID setup _before_ you install. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I vote for the 320G RAID1 as well. My option for partitions would be "/ 30G" "/boot 110M (that's meg), "swap 1G", and the remainder as "/home". During install, creating the RAID1 array is fairly straight forward. Go into Yast partitioner, delete all parts of its first guess, create a primary partition on each 320G drive, choose "Do Not Format" -- and -- in the drop down, select linux Raid as the partition type. Then choose RAID and add the two drives to it (sda, sdb). Finally, just partition the array as usual with /, /boot, /home and swap as usual. That's it, the install will continue from that point on using the "raid" partition of md0, md1, etc.. instead of sda1, sda2, etc... If the grub installer does its "flaky thing" and the system won't boot, get to command prompt by any way you can and then do "grub-install /dev/sda" and you should be fine. Also, check your bios to make sure the disks are set a bootable. IIRC, that is all there is to it. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
