Hey guys! I'm using the k_dflt kernels on all of my machines right now, but 2 of the machines are AMD Duron machines. Would I gain any performance by using the k_ath (Athlon) SuSE kernels? Should I be using them? I know the Duron isn't an Athlon, but since they're both AMD... :-) Thanks! -Jonathan

Hey Jonathon, I just recompiled a kernel, it was my first time, and can't say for sure if it actually compiled the 2.4.19 rpm I downloaded or if it was the stock .0 SuSE kernel, but anyway, I compiled it for the athlon, and mine does seem a good deal peppier, but I guess that doesn't answer if it'll work on the duron though, sorry, but thought maybe at least this might be enough to let you think it'd be worth the try. It took quite a while (mainly because I didn't know exactly everything I needed/wanted or what should be modules and what not, etc., and because something I did on the first try goofed up and had to start over, heh heh...but it was fun!), but works and like I say, my athlon 1.3 seems to be getting things done a good bit faster now. Yours was better compared to what: the k_deflt or k_athlon? What do you mean by "peppier"?
answer if it'll work on the duron though, sorry, but thought maybe at
Of course it runs on the duron as far only "athlon" is used during compile. There are even faster options, see man gcc. But as for the kernel-config, there's only athlon and it even says in the help that it is also for Duron. Ré

Compared to the stock SuSE 8.0 kernel I was running. I guess that's the k_deflt, right?

It's looking like all the apps are starting alittle quicker. Not only that, there's no 10-15 second 'pause' like I used to have when I started the download of email to kmail. Now when I click the download button, it starts instantly (I'd been watching this kinda close to make sure it wasn't my ips's server...it wasn't).

Yeah...I just took a look again, and it's for all the athlon-duron family. I'd just forgot during the compilation.

Yes, you will see a noticeable difference. I highly recommend switching. - Herman Jonathan Nichols wrote:

Herman - Ok, thanks. I'll switch them over tomorrow. -Jonathan On Thu, 12 Dec 2002, Herman Knief wrote:
