[opensuse] nvidia sound chip don't work
Hello SuSE people. I have no sound on my 11.2 except for system sounds. No audio files of any kind play with any kind of player. I have a new MSI board that has an on-board Nvidia chipset. Yast calls it a "MCP61 High Definition Audio" and sets it up with a driver snd-hda-intel. While in Yast sound setup if you go to the bottom and click on Other > Test sound, nothing happens. Close Yast. Open up Konsole and do an lsmod. No driver named snd-hda-intel. I do a modprobe for the driver, check lsmod again and see that it is inserted. Still no sound. I do an alsaconf and alsa does not find it. (It did find the MCP61 chipset and used the hda-intel in my 11.0 OS and it worked - mostly) Then I go to Personal Settings > Multimedia and check for sound. I get a message that says "The HDA Nvidia (ALC888 analog and the digital version are installed on the system but are not available, either they are unplugged or the drivers are not available." Then I go back toYast > Sound and try to add a new entry. Go to Nvidia and neither of the drivers are listed. (The snd-hda-intel nor the ALC888 Digital nor the ALC888analog) Soooo, what do I do now? Bug in 11.2? Crappy MB? Ideas and suggestions welcomed. Bob S -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi, First, what is your audio output (analog/ digital) does it uses a hdmi cable ? Check the options in kmix (does the analog or digital output is muted). If everything looks normal, you have probably the same problem as others with the last nvidia driver (190.XX). see this link: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=140999&page=1 I am puzzled by this bug. I am using a small nettop based on the nvidia ION chip, and i use the hdmi ouptut for audio and video on a HDTV. Using xbmc live or windows 7, no problem with the audio over hdmi, but with opensuse 11.2 it does nort work properly. I managed to get sound over hdmi for the kde 4 notification sounds (login / logout...) but i have no sound while playing a video/mp3 with either xmms, mplayer, vlc, youtube (in firefox). I did not try the analog output yet (well, i would prefer not to use it). I still did not find a solution, but others says that it is related to the nvidia driver. I will test the beta driver (195.XXX) as well as older ones (185.XXX) this week end. I hope that it might lead you to a solution. Hi,
Hiyourself,
First, what is your audio output (analog/ digital) does it uses a hdmi cable ? Check the options in kmix (does the analog or digital output is muted).
No, I'm not using hdmi, hence no cable. My video is dvi and the audio is straight out of jacks on the back of the computer to an amp and speakers.
If everything looks normal, you have probably the same problem as others with the last nvidia driver (190.XX). see this link: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=140999&page=1
OK, I went to that link and looked at it. Not sure we are on the same page here. Don't have any idea what that driver is. Is that a driver common to both the audio and video chipsets? Yast tells me that my audio driver for the audio chip, an "MCP61 High Definition Audio" and sets it up with a driver named snd-hda-intel. Funny thing is though, in my 11.0 OS, running KDE3, Yast shows the exact same chipset and driver and it works there. In 11.2 with KDE4 it does not.
I am puzzled by this bug. I am using a small nettop based on the nvidia ION chip, and i use the hdmi ouptut for audio and video on a HDTV. Using xbmc live or windows 7, no problem with the audio over hdmi, but with opensuse 11.2 it does nort work properly.

I also have system sounds but no other sound from any player type of applications.
I did not try the analog output yet (well, i would prefer not to use it).
I still did not find a solution, but others says that it is related to the nvidia driver. I will test the beta driver (195.XXX) as well as older ones (185.XXX) this week end.
