WGET ~ trying to download the directory tree
Giving the command :- wget -m ftp://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/Linux/MIRROR.suse/pub/suse/i386/9.0 results in a 'connect', and then, "LISTING" , and then the ftp server just sticks there . . . Have I made an error in the syntax of my wget command ? thanks best wishes ____________ sent on Linux ____________

Dear Mr. Valor, ~ this is most kind of you. Thank you. I think there must be something wrong with my install of WGET, because I have tried it on various files from several sites :- It Logs In OK then ==> Port done ==> LIST and, then, it just sits there doing nothing ~ think I must experiment some more. best wishes Richard ____________ sent on Linux ____________

Try using the passive ftp option. Dylan -- Sweet moderation Heart of this nation Desert us not We are between the wars - Billy Bragg

You can't create the equivalent of the CDs in the bought edition. You either need to put the directory tree from 9.0 on on a disk in the machine you are installing on, or export the 9.0 directory tree via NFS. There are instructions for what boot disks you might need in 9.0/boot/ README Dylan

~ i do not know, but i believe, that, if one uses the wget download script, that Snr Guillermo Ballester Valor most kindly provided, to download to a Partition, but NOT to the partition on which one aims to make the fresh install, Then, using <DD> to make 3-1/2" floppies :- 1. bootdisk 2 modules1 3. modules2 4. modules3 5. modules4 6 modules5 7. rescue ~ one can boot from the 3-1/2" floppy, load the modules that your system needs [ like Reiser filesystem], &, next commence a HardDisk install ~ you need to declare : a) the partition on which you have the ftp download b) the path to Directory /i386/9.0 As Snr Guillermo Ballester Valor says, "Have Fun" and, 'be patient' because the download is about 3-1/2 gig -- best wishes ____________ sent on Linux ____________

Dear Mr. Valor, Do you know if it is essential to download the entire install directory tree, inorder to be able to use the Install program OR, will the Installer still see Software, if I halt the download after, say 600 MB ~ I only need the aaa_base and KDE for my stand-alone PC ~ for the Installer to function, is it mandatory to download the full 3-1/2 Gig ?? Thanks { while having "Fun" } Sincerely Richard ____________ sent on Linux ____________
Hello, Depending on how good and fast is your conection, you can: a) download the entire directory tree. You should have access via ftp or NFS to that directory tree -Burn a Boot CD. The iso file it is in the boot directory (boot.iso file) -Boot your installation target system with that CD. Configure some needed modules (network, keyboard ....). -Set the way to access to the directory tree (via NFS or FTP, usually in your local network) -Continue with the installation ... Here you should choice wich kind of system you want and so on. No many differences with repect CD install b) Download only the iso file. Then burn a Boot CD with it. -Boot your installation target system with that CD. Configure some needed modules (network, keyboard ....). -Set the way to access to the mirror (via FTP). You previously have to know the mirror IP and the directory where SuSE 9.0 is. -Continue with instalation... If your bandwidth is no big you can spend some days in the installation. If something is wrong with the conection you can loose a lot of time, even you should have to begin again. a) is the choice if your bandwith to the internet is no broad enough (say 2 Mb/s), or you want to install SuSE on several systems. Is the most common situation b) is the choice if you have a fast and reliable conection to the internet and you only want to install suse in an only system. Hello again, I forget to tell that you will likely not be able to install anything if you left the directory tree incomplete Guillermo. On Wednesday 03 December 2003 17:57, pinto wrote:
