Hi All, I had an older installation of suse 8.1 crash on me. I am no longer able to boot into the gui. It goes as far as the login screen, and just before the login window appears, it freezes. My question is. How can i boot in text only mode? I did it the other day by accident, and was able to CD around on the hard drives .... I desperately need to get the data off this machine as it was a server... best regards, Paul Agner pagner@consumerinfo.com 949-567-3748

When you reach the Grub startup screen, type 'single' and you will start up in single user mode. You can then edit the inittab file and change the startup to init 3 if you want to start up in normal, none gui mode. Then reboot. When your first boot screen appears, press a key then in the line near the bottom of the screen, insert init 3 and hit enter. I t should boot into level three from there. RA -- Old age ain't for Sissies!

At he boot prompt input: init 3 and then press enter, it will stop before reaching run level five. You'll still have access to yast(ncurses) if so needed. Mike

If you have a copy of knoppix on a cd you can boot to that and do a burn of your data using k3b. It takes a bit of doing but it does bail you out for files you didn't backup <G> IIRC Suse's 9.2 eval disk wouldn't let me see anything on the HD so knoppix 3.4 -3.6 versions will let you rescue your files as you can actually get to files on the HD and it has k3b as I mentioned. -- j -- nemo me impune lacessit
