[opensuse] openSUSE 12.3 graphical update program, and zypper up, issue
Hi all, I have two openSUSE 12.3 installations in VirtualBox, one with the KDE environment without third party repositories, and one with LXDE environment with all Packman repositories. After installing the latest updates with the graphical update manager, the graphical update manager did not show any updates, at both of these installations. However zypper up, showed updates in both of them, and I installed them with it. Why didn't those updates show up in the graphical update manager? Thank you. Which graphical update manager? I you mean "YaST Online Update" aka "YOU", then it is as intended, because YOU does the equivalent of "zypper patch", not "zypper up". You can find out what that does in "man zypper" ;-) - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. OK, thank you for your answer. Why YaST2 online update performs zypper patch instead of zypper update? Ioannis Vranos http://www.cppsoftware.net On Sun, Jun 9, 2013 at 10:50 AM, Carlos E. R. <robin.listas@telefonica.net> wrote:

please do not top post. please see and follow this and other recommendations for this mail list: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Mailing_list_netiquette YaST Online Update (YOU) existed before zypper was born...and, it has 'forever' only installed security patches and major bug fixes from the update repo.. since 'forever' if a user wanted to install newer versions of software (newer, but not necessarily newer because it has a security flaw fixed) they would use YaST Software Management and repos other than just the update repo.. so, when zypper was born it was given the ability to mimic the actions of YOU by "zypper patch" *and* the actions of YaST Software Management by "zypper up".. for maximum stability and security one needs only to use either YOU or "zypper patch"....to also take in expanded features of newer software involves somewhat more risk of less stability--so, if you are willing to trade some stability for some newer, then . . . as mentioned, more can be learned in "man zypper" dd -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Because that is the design intention :-) - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
