Hi Randall,
This is wonderful. Sorry for the direct email but I wanted to ask you: can it be displayed before the logon screen? The users should see it before they supply username and password.
Two (and a half) things: 1) I'm not sure, but I don't think so, not without some lower-level programming than simple shell scripting. 2) If we put this message on the list, someone more knowledgeable than I might give you a better answer. 2a) I've redirected this reply back to the list.
Thanks, Alberto

Use one of the commands dialog, kdialog or Xdialog to present the dialog you require. They can be given labelled buttons and you can test that the required button was clicked. You can put the pertinent invocation into /etc/bash.bashrc, /etc/csh.cshrc and / or /etc/zshrc (and the system-wide start-up script for any and all shell in use on your system).

I have seen that type of warning banner shown after login, not before, to remember employees of their responsibilities. As to a login warning before login, you can use the /etc/issue and /etc/issue.net files (they can be much longer than one line). It has been mentioned that you could write or get written a customized graphical login entry; however, notice that those people that login in remotely, will not use that modified program, but their local one; for that reason, I would remain withing the standard methods. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFDOJU7tTMYHG2NR9URAp1ZAJ4sjO9cxzWlwGQKKrlKmHUUfh+EzgCbBGYb VY54ux9kdLgIVraibnv2DjQ= =/nDQ -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

It is possible to run custom programs when starting kdm, for instance to display an animated background. I've done that, but I don't quite remember where it is set; I **think** in /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/Xsession. Now if you started kdialog from that script I **think** it would be executed before the login dialog appears. Worth a try, isn't it. Helge

To answer my own question... The script is called from /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup so it appears BEFORE the login screen. Something like: xmessage -buttons OK:0,Cancel:1 -file warn.txt -center if [ $? == 0 ] then exit 0 else /sbin/reboot fi Thanks to those who answered.
