[opensuse] Vista on VirtualBox

Just thought I'd happily report that openSUSE 10.3 seems to run Vista under Virtualbox very nicely. So far Vista hasn't crashed once, and 10.3 handles multiple tasks very well. http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/2008/20080825_virtualbox_vista.jpg (I'm finally rid of XP!) -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Two questions: 1) Is this a multi-core or multi-processor system? 2) How does Vista cope with the virtualized graphics adaptor? (I was under the impression it required a heavy-duty graphics card.)

Guest VM is always uniprocessor. Vista works fine with that. Of course CPU must be fast (2 GHz) and have 1 GB of RAM.
2) How does Vista cope with the virtualized graphics adaptor? (I was under the impression it required a heavy-duty graphics card.)
Vista needs good video card for advanced 3D effects (Aero Glass). It can work in basic mode with standard VGA card. How is Vista good? First time I booted into Vista and tried to use the remote that came with the laptop to adjust the volume the thing froze solid. Other minor things will freeze the system tight. Like anything else, once you strip the crap off it and turn off the unnecessary junk, it'll run just fine. I bought a reconditioned Toshiba p205, 17" display, Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-58, 2G, and 160G laptop for $513 (including shipping) and Vista Home Premium came installed. Even with Aero Glass doing it's thing, I have no problems at all. Once all the UAE or whatever it is called was disabled, and a few other tweaks from the web to get rid of annoyances, vista just whistles along. I can't see any benefit over XP and aero pales in comparison to compiz hands down. Of course I had to dump the 160G drive that came with it, install a new 320G, Partition it 60G for vista, the rest for openSuSE. I boot back every once in a while just to keep current on updates. It still runs great for that purpose;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. That's not the question. I'm interested in how much concurrent processing potential the physical / host system possesses.

So it is the case that the user experience of Vista is not good without a graphics card with "advanced 3D effects?" And to date there are no virtualization systems the provide such a graphics adaptor in their virtual machine environment, right? So is Vista practical under virtualization?

From a Microsoft staff member's own words - Vista and Windows 2003 both run fastest under XEN in SLES. Go figure. Oh, and I haven't tried much of the effects. I can't stand that kind of thing, which I why I don't run Compiz or Beryl. I am running the VM on a dual-core 32-bit P-IV 2.0GHz system with 2G RAM, one GB assigned to the VM, along with 128MB video. -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Highly unlikely. Xen cannot beat VBox.
Go figure.

Okay, will do. I plan to remove teh eye candy anyway, as I don't need it. Okay on another note - I was cutting and pasting my VMWare XP and OSX files from my home drive to a USB drive. Not that I particularly like Vista but is opensuse "practical" without Compiz? Is the "experiance" "bad" without Compiz? I wouldn't say yes to either. So what if you don't have pretty transparant graphics and a nice effect when you minimize a windowYou sill have UAC and the making of everything that used to be 1-2 mouse clicks away 3-4 mouse clicks away to keep your "experiance" "good" when you run Vista under VirtualBox. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

All Linux systems are practical without Compiz. They're extremely practical without a GUI at all. Windows is another issue entirely. Its command-line interpreter is an even bigger piece of trash than is the Outlook family, so without its GUI it's virtually a non-entity.
So what if you don't have pretty transparant graphics and a nice effect when you minimize a window? You sill have UAC and the making of everything that used to be 1-2 mouse clicks away 3-4 mouse clicks away to keep your "experiance" "good" when you run Vista under VirtualBox.
But that's really not my question, which was sincere. I am curious whether Vista is crippled in the absence of a high-end graphics adaptor or whether it degrades / falls back to a usable if less attractive mode when it doesn't have the GPU power to do the fancy stuff. I have the fancy stuff turned off, and vista looking like Win2K on my systems. Don't need it - just like in KDE - and don't really want it. http://www.perfectreign.com/stuff/2008/20080827_vista_plain.jpg I have kde running very vanilla.
I don't know what UAC is.
User Account Control - basically it allows a similar function to sudo in linux, where various actions require an authorization to occur. I think is a good idea. I have it turned off. :P

If you substitute the phrase "certain rarely used things" for the word "everything" your statement is correct. Really, the whole UAC thing is way overblown. Two questions:
1) Is this a multi-core or multi-processor system? 2) How does Vista cope with the virtualized graphics adaptor? (I was under the impression it required a heavy-duty graphics card.)

You prefer Vista?
Very much so. I have always hated XP, in fact, it is why I moved to Linux. Vista is *almost* ready for the general population. You still don't have a central package management system, and it crashes more than openSUSE but I've been running it for over a year on one of my desktops. It is almost as good as Win2K was. (I still have Win2K on my wife's computer.) openSUSE, however, is much more usable and has far superior features. I only use the VM for work-related items, such as running our C#-based applications or IE-only intranet sites that require ActiveX. -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

My experience as well. I can't compare VB to other Virtual hosts because once I installed virtualbox, I never had a need to look elsewhere. Vista better than XP? Dunno about that. I find it a bit more cumbersome, but since I rarely use either anymore I probably have never taken the time to see the difference;-) -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. This discussion is running into a pro/con Vista :-) - so let me give my 2 cents... - for my 11 year old son, I bought/built a new gamer PC. With preloaded Vista Home. I was quite a lot against it, but he and his friends are gamers. He runs SuSE11 for serious stuff though. Now, he's downloading all sorts of stuff (Gary's Mod etc.) from the net. Changing all possible settings, really playing with it. Much to my surprise, it just runs. And runs. Only once did I have to roll back using the built-in rollback feature. This does not make me love Vista and certainly not MS. But I *have* changed my set mind on Vista since this. My daughter and wife both runs OpenSuSE 11. My wife for speed (she HATES ! MS-updates at boot-up) and interestingly enough my daughter (14) runs OpenSUSE due to Kopete! Which she thinks is way better than messing with Messenger. She also claims that the S11 is way more stable than what her friends have (Windows this and that). The bottom line; she couldn't care less about the OS. But she voluntarily chose S11 for stability, multiple backgrounds (desktops...), easy access to the pictures and videos in her mobile phone, the VLC player (she listens to music ALL the time, sigh) - and of all..Kopete! -- ------------------------------ Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard Novell Certified Linux Professional 10035701 http://www.os-academy.dk "There are 10 types of people; those who understand binary, and those who don't" ------------------------------ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
