'Have a client who bought a Toshiba with an ATI HD-3100 video chipset. I installed the kernel headers and ran the ATI driver installer, which went smoothly. The only problem is, when I go into the KDE desktop setup, composting is temporarily disabled and it REFUSES to turn on and stay on, thus no 3D. The ATI config. software under KDE seems fine....sets up with no problems. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? Thanks! Perhaps you should have added just a tad more horse-manure and just a bit more compost starter and water to help the composting along...
See above.
Thanks!
No problemo. Any time.

That's a much newer chipset, if I remember correctly. The HD3100 is STILL being used in new computers "on the shelf" today, but ATI decided the was one of the "old" chipsets. Considering from what I have read that 9.10 was a total disaster as a release I am not surprised that you are suggesting the installation of 9.04 :-) . The question here is, with 9.04 using an old kernel, is the problem with the ATI driver or is it kernel related? I thought that I had read recently that the ATI drivers were improved and released (?)a few weeks ago - but don't quote me, it's just something which I seem to have read somewhere, maybe :-) . No, surprisingly, you're memory is correct.....this time. ;) 9.04 DOES work well on SOME hardware. The latest ATI/AMD unified driver will work on some systems, BUT the chipset has to be one of the latest. The problem is that there's a lot of "older" chipsets being used on NEW 'puters in stores presently and there's only 2D support with NO acceleration!! AMD awhile ago blew it's nose and said they want to support the "older" chipsets, but there's been NO movement in that direction and I'm not about to hold my breath waiting for them. The numskulls at ATI who write drivers should be fired, and simply make ALL the specs open source!!! The Linux community could have GOOD drivers written in no time. Fred -- A REVOLUTIONARY IDEA! You are optimist, or you have one of "can't resist" moments :-) I have one of older ATI chipsets (X200) and I can't use proprietary drivers as they either don't support those chipsets (newer versions), or don't compile with new kernel (older versions). Probably both. But, I have seen how when the "community" has the code it needs to write good drivers, they can do so in good time.
The os version is the best that can be done when you don't have all the info. needed to write a good driver(s). ATI/AMD hasn't released the code needed to write good drivers, so the "community" can't be blamed. It would appear that 3D for ATI cards for Linux is a contradiction. I had hoped that when AMD bought ATI, the Linux support would improve. It hasn't and that speaks poorly about AMD.
