Some comments for the archives, (no urgent problems) maybe it will help some one in the future. Just bought a Dell 1700n printer. The Dell website said it was compatible with Red Hat and SuSe linux. Specifically they listed SuSe 7.2, 7.3 and 8.0; but I guessed that later versions would probably work, and since I've never bought a printer before that even mentioned linux it seemed like a safe bet. First tried to configure it through YAST. No luck. Then to my surprise, installed the disc and found a directory labled UNIX. The unix directory actually had a linux driver .rpm and an install program. I ran the install program - it reported back ok, then asked for another script to be run. I did. It reported a satisfactory installation. Printer still didn't print though. Removed the .rpm, and tried installing the .rpm and with YAST, then configuring the printer with YAST - no luck Went to the Dell Support Site, entered my product ID. It prompted me for an OS. Since nothing but MS was listed I clicked NA. It said there were no drivers available other than Microsoft. On the same page, I noticed a link to Dell Ftp site. I clicked there, clicked the Printer directory, then tried to find something with other than an .exe extension. Amazingly I found something called /Dell1815dn_Linux_DriverA02.tar.gz I downloaded it, and untarred it. It created a directory called cdroot. It has no readme file or any other instruction. The cdroot directory only contains two things. A "Linux" subdirectory and a file called autorun. I made my way through the Linux subdirectory, but couldn't fine anything that looked like a driver file, or any instruction. Out of desperation I clicked an executable icon called "guiinstall" - it started an installation gui - but it failed. Finally, at the top level of the cdroot directory, I clicked "autorun". It started a Windows like "Wizard" and finished with a successful install note. And believe it or not - it actually works great!!! So I guess this means Dell supports Linux, sort of...
