Hi all,
KDE4 final is just released. Anyone have installed it? Any caveats or unexpected side effects?
Positive feedback is welcome too :-)))
Hi Andrei I've been looking at KDE4 on oss 10.3 for a while now, and the final release (updated today) is looking very good. It's not at the level where I'd tell someone to stop using KDE 3.5x for everyday use, but it's stable, configurable and usable. My big problem is with kdevelop from 3.x with the scripting profile - I'm seeing a lot of session crashes that I can't track down. I don't think a native kdevelop for 4.x is available (I could be wrong). Having said that, I've started to migrate my 3.5x settings to 4.00, such as kmail, kopete contacts and settings etc. It's different, but the change is very nice, fresh and welcome. I see the point behind the whole development effort now, and I'm enthused by the possibilities for the future of KDE. I should think by 4.01 I'll have changed over entirely (fingers crossed). Congratulations to all the opensuse KDE team, you've done a great job and you should be suitably proud of your efforts. The desktop looks really clean and smart (once I'd moved all the icons from the centre of the screen!) and the whole 'feel' of the system is fast, snappy and modern. Top job all around! I was never a big fan of the sliding menu, but I am sure I will get used to it. My biggest issue was with dual-head monitor and a spanned desktop. All of my icons got dumped to the secondary monitor and couldn't drag them over to the primary. Instead, they slid off the wallpaper and the wallpaper started scrolling off the other side of the screen. I am sure by reading through some docs I can figure that out, too, but it just seemed strange. Until I figure that one out, I will go back to 3.5 for my everyday stuff.
