Okay - I think I have 8.0 sorted out - mostly. Except that I NEED to be able to ftp into the SuSE8.0 box. The method I used in 7.3 (enabling services in /etc/inetd.conf isn't working.) Somebody please tell me how to set up for this. If I can't resolve this, I'll have to switch to RH or something else. -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER1@MN.RR.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

Okay, installing vsftp and enabling it in inetd.conf getsd me anonymous acces to /usr/local/ftp. How do I set this up so that I can FTP to and from my home directory? -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER1@MN.RR.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

From vsftpd.conf(5):
chroot_list_enable If activated, you may provide a list of local users who are placed in a chroot() jail in their home directory upon login. The meaning is slightly dif- ferent if chroot_local_user is set to YES. In this case, the list becomes a list of users which are NOT to be placed in a chroot() jail. By default, the file containing this list is /etc/vsftpd.chroot_list, but you may override this with the chroot_list_file setting. chroot_local_user If set to YES, local users will be placed in a chroot() jail in their home directory after login. Warning: This option has security implications, especially if the users also have shell access. Only enable if you know what you are doing. Default: NO -- -ckm
This falls into "system administration" and I highly recommend becoming familiar with http://www.wdm.com/LDP/HOWTO/Net-HOWTO/x810.html is important. Hi Jay, Is inetd running? If not go to: Yast2 > System > Runlevel Editor > properties and enable inetd for runlevels 3,4 and 5 This the new way services are started in SuSE 8. :-) Cheers, Marcel

Yeah, inetd is set to run in RL 2 3 & 5, and it is running. What next? -- JAY VOLLMER JVOLLMER1@MN.RR.COM TEXT REFS DOUBLEPLUSUNGOOD SELFTHINK VERGING CRIMETHINK IGNORE FULLWISE

Like Anders already said: Did you activate the ftp server you actually installed (ftpd, wuftp, proftp, pureftp or vsftp)? Machine is pingable and you're not trying to ftp as root are you ? (sorry, just checking). cheers, Marcel
