When trying to play a cd with xmms-cd, or any other cd player for that matter I get no sound? I can rip and play mp3's OK - any suggestions? -- Phil Burness Linux User since 1991 - currently using SuSE 9.3 Warrington - United Kingdom

There's an audio cable that goes from your CD to your sound card. Do you have one of those? Here's a picture of one: http://images10.newegg.com/NeweggImage/productimage/27-106-012-06.JPG HTH, -JM

Do you have cable pluged in back of your cd-rom and in the mainboard?
That cable is needed when you use your CD-ROM to play music sans software using the buttons on the CD-ROM's front. Otherwise your ribbon cable handles the data to the music player.

I can rip and play mp3's OK - any suggestions? I'm using KDE 3.4.0b, XMMS version 1.2.10.
In XMMS do CTL+P to bring up preferences, go to Audio I/O plugins, select the CD Audio player plugin and select configure. There is a play mode option -> select "Digital audio extraction" instead of "Analog". Hope this helps. -- Don

For what it is worth, I have no audio cable from my CD player and XMMS plays CDs just fine. Could it be mixer setting? Have you tried Amarok? That also works here, although KsCD doesn't. I'm just asking to try to save you from opening the case again :-) -- Don Raboud, Ph.D., P.Eng.
