Hi I upgraded from SuSe 6.3 to 7.1, (that was a thrill..yech). I then removed what I thought was unnecessary programs, but I seem to have lost 2 that are needed very much by the system. SED and grep....I have tried to find them, but to no avail. Does anyone know what package of program they reside in, so I can re-install those programs and get things running again? tia Doug Roberts dgr@sk.sympatico.ca -----------------------------------------------------------------

You need to reinstall the 'base' package. (mmj@demeter) ~> rpm -qf `which awk` base-2001.1.15-0 (mmj@demeter) ~> rpm -qf `which grep` base-2001.1.15-0 -- Mads Martin Joergensen, http://mmj.dk "Why make things difficult, when it is possible to make them cryptic and totally illogic, with just a little bit more effort." -- A. HI nope Martin, just no go...I used Yast to update all the files in the a1 directory and Yast squawked real bad that grep and sed were not to be found.I now have the problem when I try to re-initialize my firewall script I get the following error message: Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than /lib/modules/2.2.18/modules.dep NOW what do I do? Sed and grep are nowhere to be found still, and now parts of my firewall script (that used to work perfectly) won't let through data that is needed (yes, the proper allowances in the ip-chains script are still there, just that there are the above error messages and I don't seem to be able to connect to the targeted site). In addition, I cannot save the ip-chains script..ipchains-save gives screens of errors saying that sed is not there and it just won't save. I realize that I removed something I shouldn't have..now has anyone any ideas as to where I can find sed and grep? Thank you all that may help Doug Roberts dgr@sk.sympatico.ca -----------------------------------------------------------------

I believe you can fix that by executing "depmod" as root.

I messed up my aaa_base stuff at one point and got similar messages. After screwing around with it for several days I finally tried using rpm directly on the aaa_base package on the CD to install it (from a text terminal, of course), and that seemed to get me going again when nothing else would (in particular, Yast would not). Hi I finally figured out what you were telling me...sometimes I need a two by four to figure out what is simply said...I went in the CD and found the files that the other two people were talking about and re-installed them. Now all I have to do is get KDE to run after it messed up its X config file, but that is for another time. Thanks for all your help people. It wasn't at all obvious, either from the other posts or from any other source, that Yast (either 1 or 2) is simply incapable of fixing certain problems with missing files in aaa_base. It took me a long time to realize that nothing less than an explicit call on rpm, applied to the files on the CD, would suffice. Paul Abrahams
