SuSE 9.1, fails to read /dev/hda partitions...
Got 9.1 yesterday, managed to do a network install onto a secondary computer with no problems. Tried it today on my main computer, upon the install screen was greeted by a message stating that my partitions were not readable by parted and nothing basically could be changed. This system did boot fine with 8.2. Managed to get the system installed by switching to another terminal and then using "partprobe /dev/hda", the installation was then able to see /dev/hda's partitions fine. During install I let it download and install the newest updates, but on reboot and booting from hard drive I was greeted with a kernel panic as once again the 2.6 failed to see the partitioning on a master drive. Kind of worried about updating whilst in the system, as last time I was not able to get back in, even via partprobe, as some modules could not be found. Also, noticed that during bootup when the hard drive is noticed, right below that it shows th partitions, however with /dev/hda it was showing a mazsize statement only. Did try acpi off, no dma. Any known fix? Thanks, Matt
Well, yeah, sadly, I had the same problem, I had /dev/hda2 (root partition)
formatted XFS, but the kernel wasn't able to mount it... I am still
wondering what to do... to boot with an older SuSE distro (8.2, 9.0), and to
update the kernel somehow (there's plenty of updates available - that makes
me wonder if that wasn't a "rush release" - I don't have any excuse for the
SuSE team and I find NO explanation, whatsoever, for leaving the kernel
without XFS support)
I had LOTS of other problems, (no XFS support, slab.c kernel panic, grub not
installable, hunging at start, hunging at installation finish)
I am pretty upset and I feel like I have been let down by the SuSE team, I
wasn't expecting such a mess from a German company
I CAN'T believe that nobody used XFS in the whole BETA team - it seems
unbelievable!!!!

I have yet to purchase 9.1 here. We need XFS support for sure. Is there any fix for this ? We have standardized our servers on Debian previously but as the latest one had new Adaptec Raid, SuSE was the only distro that would pick up the hardware and find the HD upon the install. Kudo's to SuSE on the 9.0 Pro version for this. We are awaiting to hear now on the XFS issue before moving up. Dee

There is a fix for the "XFS" problem. Look in the SDB database for the explaination and a patch for the fix. I have not tried it yet. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2)

Same pbm here. Installed 9.1 with ReiserFS then when I tried to mount my /home (XFS) from my Mandrake 9.2 installation I got a seg fault. Had to reboot to MDK 9.2, transfer the data I needed to a temporary "compatible" space then reboot into 9.1... I bought 9.1 pro for the supposed quality (being a long time Mandrake user, I know what a lack of QA can sometimes produce) but I must say I'm slightly disappointed. Except for the awesome YAST2 and the 9.1 pro packaging the rest of the distro is like Mandrake or not as good. I also think that kernel 2.6.x is not as good (stable?) as kernel 2.24.20+ is. With both Suse 9.1 and MDK 10.0 my box has been unstable with sudden reboots. I don't get that (or a lot less) with MDK 9.2 /Fred

The explanation was placed on this list about 10 days ago..... A bug was found too late in the ship process to fix. The kernel will not run with XFS support on /.

Given the amount of errors I'm reading about 9.1 (and not planning to start a flame war, just asking). While this is probably not exactly what you had in mind, YaST2 will offer you all available updates via YOU (YaST Online Update) during the initial install. Yes, but what I was thinking was to prepare 1 or 2 DVD at one location (where I have a fast line and a burner) and then being able to do an upgrade and/or fresh install at another location (where I don't have a fast line, nor a burner, and I do have 9 boxes to do). regards, ===== Riccardo G. Setup your own repository, by copying the DVD/CDs to HD. Copy the updates and everything else into the same rpm repository. After that create the repository admin files with create_package_descr
rpm -qf /usr/bin/create_package_descr autoyast2-utils-2.8.14-20

To be more fair: The xfs bug itself was very old, but was hidden by another bug. Fixing the second bug in the last minute activates the xfs bug, which was found too late. At some point you cannot stop the process anymore. I'm not the judge of that, BUT I pull the alarm on that one since 24.04.2004 - the subject of the mail was: "KOTD 2.6.5.8-60 - Bad XFS module", I quote: "I've installed last night kernel-default-2.6.5-8.60.i586.rpm and I got kernel panic at xfs module - so I switched back to my "old" kernel-default-2.6.5-8.26 - I'm not blaming anyone, I thought that you should be aware of this" Only Örn Hansen responded and he said, I quote: "Recreate the initrd, and make sure the kernel module is there ... or, use the old initrd, it's the same kernel version, just a new build" - yeah, right! :)) Anyway, I have two proposals now for you, the SuSE team: 1. Maybe you should consider enlarging the Beta Team (I myself, I was trying to subscribe to the beta list, but nobody even bother to answer - this is not polite) :)) 2. Let us know when the workaround (another CD1 ISO image or any workaround) will be available for download - I have a couple of machines with XFS / partitions waiting for the upgrade :))) Thanks, Radu Thorsten Kukuk wrote:

Radu, did you see this one already: http://portal.suse.de/sdb/en/2004/04/91_xfsfix.html If your computer is equipped with a floppy drive, download the floppy image xfs_hotfix.img and copy it to a floppy disk with the command dd. At the same page (http://portal.suse.de/sdb/en/2004/04/91_xfsfix.html), it
says, I quote:
"Warning: This Driver Update works not for Systems that have XFS on the

working on a solution for that."
Where's the truth??? I don't want to do testing on my machines :)))
