Hi This , and a couple of other error messages in /var/log/warn since updating to 2.4.2-4GB kernel, modutils, and ppp suse-rpm's . I'm trying to keep with my 7.0 stuff as much as is possable - while trying to update only what is required by the new kernel series.

Sounds like the package pidentd is not installed, but the identd daemon is enabled in /etc/inetd.conf. Disable the identd service in /etc/inetd.conf. -<> I don't have a inetd.conf in /etc maybe if I find the package pidentd on my suse7.0 cd's , and install it , then, uninstall it if it isn't needed . I just use ppp and a 33.3k modem - On the GPM mouse , I use that in console mode a lot but have no gpmctl device in /dev , if gpm needs gpmctl - I could reinstall the devices package off my 7.0 cd's . I hope that doesn't mess up anything with the new 2.4.2-4GB kernel , seem that it should'nt be a problem - at this point who knows anyway - guess I'll just go ahead and do it . I may have some quirks on this partition ,2gb , because I have updated on it since SuSE 5.0 - but have tried to keep things in order. Still there are things that do not turn out right for example, permissions differences - from time to time have left me wondering if a new distro pack will even install all the files correctly. It's definately better to save your important stuff to backup , and reformat for the new install . thanks for suggestions John W Mislan God does not play dice" -- Einstein "Not only does God play dice, he sometimes throws them where they can't be seen." -- Stephen Hawking
