JP ----------=================== John, The only thing to do presently is to either download the new XFree86 software and compile or wait until 4.3 comes out in rpm form from SuSE. If you have 8 bit on the intel, you are lucky to have that as the i810, i830 & i845 graphics are not supported under the present 4.2 version of xfree86. I see many mails on the xfree86 list asking about those chipset graphics.

I had no problems getting a i845 chipset to work on an IBM A30 desktop machine here (SuSE 8.1, Xfree 4.2). I ran into the same issue with the color depth. Since this chipset is usually only found built-in, I checked the BIOS settings. There I found a place to set the amount RAM to share for use with video. That solved my problem right away.
