I'm very new to Linux. I have SuSE 8.0 on my computer now. I wanted to install some software I downloaded off the 'net. According to the instructions, I'm supposed to gunzip and tar the files. Then perform: ./configure make Unfortunately, I get an error with 'make'. I tried man make, but no entries. Is there another way to install software in SuSE? Mark

What is the error you are getting? Did you get an error when you did the ./configure part? There are lots of ways to install software in Linux.... if I had to itemize.. maybe: - compile from source (the configure, make, make install route) - RPM - apt-get There are many other ways... each has it's advantages and disadvantages. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 First, make sure the software you want is not already on the SuSE CDs. Only a small fraction of what is available is installed by default. For this, launch YaST2, choose "Add/Remove software". In the list in the upper-top corner, choose "Package groups" and browse! Now if you're sure it isn't on the SuSE CDs, you have to know that Linux softwares are usually distributed in two ways: - - In source form, you need to compile it. It can be technical, you need special tools for the CDs. - - In binary form, ready to install. This is how your SuSE system was installed, it is of course the easiest. Usually, a software in source form is a "tarball" (a zipped archive with extension .tar.gz or .tar.bz2, depending on the compression program that was used). Once it is uncompressed, you usually run "./configure", then "make" and then "make install". It can take time and you need numerous tools to get it done (autoconf, automake, libtool, the header files for all your libraries, etc). If you're new, you should forget about this. A software in binary form is usually an archive in RPM format (.rpm extension). To install it, click on the RPM file you want to install. It will launch KPackage. A window appears with information on the package you want to install. Accept it. It asks for the root password. Give it and let the installation go on. Finished! Sometimes things do not so well because: - - the RPM package was not made for your system and has some incompatibilities - - the RPM depends on another one that must be installed first Only a bit of patience and experience can help you with that kind of problem, but don't hesitate to write here. ;-) Le Mardi 5 Novembre 2002 19:14, Fancher, Mark (GEAE) a écrit :

Yes, its call rpm (Redhat Package Manager) and it all depends on what software you are trying to install. Most software available for linux is available in rpm format. After you download the rpm for the software you want from the web you run this command as root: rpm -Uvh <insert package name here>.rpm The U stands for update this is good if you have an older version of the same software and do not want both version hanging out on your system. The vh gives you lots of output so you can see what the heck is going on. What kind of package are you trying to install? These days compiling your own is for those folks who want the app tweaked for special options, or they want a program that runs really fast (when I compile my own they always seen to run faster) or finally you want to use some bleeding edge program that has not been packaged yet. -- Johnathan Bailes BAE Systems ESI "UNIX was not designed to stop you from doing stupid things, because that would also stop you from doing clever things." - Doug Gwyn ---

For newbies, I don't recommend installing from sources. If you can spend $40 on the distro, that would be nice. Then all you have to do is to use yast and install the pre-built sofware. NOTE: I am not trying to sell you anything---The thing is for newbies, there is a lot to learn, so the CDs or (DVD in the Professional Edition) really help. If you don't want to spend $$$, you can download the ISOs and burn your own CDs, but please don't ask me what an ISO is and how to burn them. Salman
You have probably used the default installation from
SuSE.. "man make" may not be installed...
you can type at a prompt "whereis make" if the path is
not return then you should go head and install
gcc, make, binutils etc. to be able to compile and
install you new application...first try to see if a
rpm exist for that application if not compile it your
self it's not that hard.... read the README & INSTALL
files
Good luck.
