[opensuse] f*ck F*ck - damn nvidia mismatch
![](https://seccdn.libravatar.org/avatar/142805b13733da6a1330e4d6ba409de3.jpg?s=120&d=mm&r=g)
Hi all I've stuffed my config by using "zypper dup" - it seems to have stuffed the Xorg/X11/Nvidia config as i can't load X now. its the old mismatch of Nvidia and X11-video-nvidiaG02, they are both 190.53 but the nvidia-gfxg02 is a couple of minor releases higher - is there any reason for them to produce these complimentary files on the Nvidia.com site when they don't match? is it possible to use zypper to restore the previous config? I don;t want to have to reinstall from DVD unless i have to. thanks Ian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Anyone know which "nvidia" module doesn;t exist? The only ones i can see in he repos are the proprietary driver modules. thanks Ian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

How did you switch to nv (The system shouldn't be looking for "nvidia" in that case)? There is a command "switch2nv" that should do the switch for you. If that doesn't work, I would first of all rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if it exists) to something else so you can get your original back. Then you could try restarting X. If that fails, I would do; as root: init 3 sax2 -r -m 0=nv - Make any changes you want - accept init 5 That should get X running with the nv driver. -- Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

How did you switch to nv (The system shouldn't be looking for "nvidia" in that case)? There is a command "switch2nv" that should do the switch for you. I removed the nvidia stuff via yast and it assumed it had to use "nv"
If that doesn't work, I would first of all rename /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if it exists) to something else so you can get your original back.
Then you could try restarting X. I run "startx" and it worked until i rebooted then failed again. If that fails, I would do; as root:
init 3 sax2 -r -m 0=nv - Make any changes you want - accept init 5
That should get X running with the nv driver. Sort of works with "startx" but sax2 did not allow me to move the screen at all. it just ran like a batch job. When KDE was up, i couldn't start yast2 or key anything into a konsole.
looks like a reinstall - why does GUI config cause so much grief?? thanks for the advice -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

There was just an update to 195.36, could it be that you updated one and not the other? Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I cant see how you can select a specific release, i can see all the versions on the nvidia site via FTP but yast/zypper doesn't allow you to pick. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, you can. In YaST you can go to the "versions" tab in the software management module, where you can select specific versions. But in my case, I just did "zypper up" and got the updated versions Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

With zypper you can do just that by typing the version after the pacakge name: zypper in name-version even zypper in name=version works -- cheers, jano Ján Kupec YaST team ---------------------------------------------------------(PGP)--- Key ID: 637EE901 Fingerprint: 93B9 C79B 2D20 51C3 800B E09B 8048 46A6 637E E901 ---------------------------------------------------------(IRC)--- Server: irc.freenode.net Nick: jniq Channels: #zypp #yast #suse #susecz ---------------------------------------------------------(EOF)---

Probably I had the same issue (or similar). I´m on 11.1 and after Nvidia update X would not start. I understood that somehow nvidia built the driver nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-pae-195.36.15_2.6.27.45_0.2-11.2.i586.rpm against kernel 2.6.27.45_0.2 while current kernel for 11.1 is 2.6.27.45_0.1. I did some ¨dirty¨ stuff - has just copied all modules from /lib/modules/2.6.27.45-0.2-pae/updates to /lib/modules/2.6.27.45-0.1-pae/updates and did depmod -a and voila... X is back. -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
