Dear SuSErs, after reading all I can find on printing, at www.dosemu.org , and being stumped by 'wrong format octet stream' errors, it seems best work-around is to use "Ksnapshot" the take a snap of what one wants to print, and, then, to Print that "Ksnapshot" :) . . . any other insights into DOSemu Printing are most Welcome. thanks ...........

Here's what I do: 1) Create a 'dos' printer.... (which can point to the same printer as you would normally print to) 2) Make the dos printer a 'raw' printer which means no filters, no ppd, nothing. Check in /etc/printcap when you're done creating this printer to see if it is labeled as: dos|raw 3) Go into /etc/cups and down at the bottom of: mime.types mime.convs you will find a comment like: # # Raw filter... # # Uncomment the following filter and the application/octet-stream type # in mime.types to allow printing of arbitrary files without the -oraw # option. # application/octet-stream application/vnd.cups-raw 0 - and uncomment them. 4) restart CUPS 5) Edit /etc/dosemu/dosemu.conf under 'printer settings' $_printer = "dos" $_printer_command = "lp -d dos -o raw" (and report back... :-) -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. If you explicitely specify "-o raw" in the print command then there is no need to avtivate the fallback to application/octet-stream in mime.types and mime.convs. For example test it with: head -n 2 /dev/urandom >/tmp/urandom lp -d <queue> /tmp/urandom results "client-error-document-format-not-supported" but lp -d <queue> -o raw /tmp/urandom works in any case. If you activate the fallback to application/octet-stream in mime.types and mime.convs then any kind of unknown data format will be printed in raw mode. Therefore you can print by accident for example /boot/vmlinuz or any proprietary DOS or Windows file (e.g. doc) and because it is printed in raw mode the printer will print tons of sheets with meaningless characters. To be safe you should not automatically fall back to raw mode but prefer to request raw mode explicitely by "-o raw" only when you know that it makes sense. I'm sure you are quite right.... and in that case, there is no need to define a 'dos' printer. Just make the print command: $_printer_command = "lp -o raw"

Did you do any editing of the CUPS files?? I would go into yast again and make sure that your printer setup is the same as when you originally installed whatever release it is that you are running.

I'm not familiar with DOSemu but if you refer to the man page on lpr you will find all the details on the command options. i.e. man lpr The -l option Specifies that the print file is already formatted for the destination and should be sent without filtering. This option is equivalent to "-oraw". I also think you may have to specify the printer with the -P option. The printer name should be the same that appears in the kprinter dialog box. therefore change your printer command to $_printer_command = "lpr -l -P <printer>" replacing <printer> with the appropriate printer name. -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------

Let's go back and try to make it simple. 1) Forget the editing of /etc/cups mime.xxxx files 2) Forget creating a new dos printer set for 'raw' 3) You need to find the dosemu.conf file and edit that. In 8.1, it should have been in /opt/dosemu/conf/ In 9.1 or 9.2 it should now be in /etc/dosemu/ You need to uncomment and modify the line: $_printer_command = "lpr" to make it be: $_printer_command = "lp -o raw' This *should* do raw printing for you.... but you may need to tweak other things as well. At a guess - You do not have a printer named 'lp' Somewhere in the config you have to specify a printer that is valid.
........................................
In SuSE vers 8.0 am using CUPs.
......................................
the DOSemu configuration file in my home dosemu directory, is called " ~/.dosemurc " { I believe that it is ~/.dosemurc that I am supposed to adjust, rather than "global.conf" }

# $_printer = "lp"
Change this setting to your actual printer name e.g. "Stylus COLOR 200" Check the name is correct using the following command lpstat -a
# Nov. 15. 2004 # printer { file "/usr/tmp/dos-print-1" timeout 10 } # printer { file "/dev/lp0" timeout 10 }
# printer { command "lpr" options "-p %s" timeout 10 }
# Nov. 16. 2004
# $_ports = "device /dev/lp0 fast range 0x3bc 0x3bf" # lpt0
# Print command to use. Default: "lpr", for "lpr -P printername". # Sometimes (with CUPS) "lpr -l" is necessary. # $_printer_command = "lpr -l -P Stylus COLOR 200" # $_printer_command = "lpr"
# idle time in seconds before spooling out. Default: (20)
# $_printer = "lp0"
Try this command it should be right
# $_printer_command = "lpr -l"
# $_printer_timeout = (20)

Is there, please, anything obvious, that could produce error message "print_job: resource name '/printers/lp' no good!" ?
...............................
my Printer is an Epson Stylus Color 200 , on /dev/lp0
See my inline comments. To make sure the printer name is correct use lpstat -a which will list all your printers and their status. man lpstat for more info. Best of luck! -- Regards, Graham Smith ---------------------------------------------------------
Hello, On Nov 16 16:36 pinto wrote (shortened):

You don't have a queue "lp". To reproduce it try to print with echo hello | lp -d doesnotexist and in /var/log/cups/error_log the matching message is shown. Use lpstat -p to list which queues you actually have. If you have a queue "foobar" then use the print command lp -d foobar -o raw for unfiltered (i.e. "raw") printing when there is a printer driver running in dosemu or use the print command lp -d foobar for filtered printing - e.g. to print plain ASCII text - it needs filtering for correct linefeeds and formfeeds - otherwise you may get plain ASCII text printed like this: first line second line third line and no formfeed at the end (i.e. the sheet is not ejected).
